Geary County Rural Fire Responded to Afternoon Grass Fire

A grass fire was reported Thursday afternoon in rural Geary County that burned approximately 50 acres of grassland.

Garry Berges, Geary County Rural Fire Chief, said that the call came in at geary county fire departmentapproximately 1:30 p.m. on Erickson road in about the 6500 block.

“It looks like the fire was caused by a high power line Westar Energy owns that some guide wires were loose and with the wind and stuff started the fire,” Berges said.

Due to the wind Berges said crews had to change how they battled the blaze.

“We normally fight from one side of the fire but it was not effective so we had to change how we fought the fire. We were on the scene for about an hour and a half.”

Six trucks and 15 fire personnel responded to the scene. Westar Energy crews also were on scene repairing the guide wires.
