Ron Walker, Geary USD 475 Superintendent, reviewed the districts discipline policy today after the Obama administration unveiled comprehensive guidance on school discipline.
The guidance from the Obama administration urges schools to get rid of
overly zealous discipline policies which tend to treat minority students unfairly.
Walker said that the discipline policy at Geary USD 475 is a progressive one that depends on the number of incidences a student is involved in.
“For instance if I had five incidents and I get involved with somebody who had once incident, then the punishment could be different because I had more contact that was negative,” Walker said.
When it comes to the diversity in the district Walker said that he doesn’t see a real problem with minority students being punished differently.
“In some instances it could be. In most instances it’s not. I think we have a fairly good staff and really great administrators who really just work hard to make sure that there is not a difference, but every now and then we may have something we just have to correct.”
Walker said that if he ever saw an incident that may become a problem with the Office of Civil Rights he would step in immediately.
“I’m monitoring our numbers constantly and if I ever see anything that I think would cause a red flag with them I’m going to jump in and say wait a minute we can’t do this. So far I just haven’t seen it.”
