Eight to nine inches is the snowfall estimate for much of Geary County following Saturday’s winter storm.
Chuck Otte, Geary County Extension Agent, reported 8.5 inches as the 24-hour total as of seven a.m. Sunday at his home on the west side of Junction City. “I had eight – nine inches of snow, between half – three quarters of an inch of liquid precipitation. It looks like that maintained through the northern part of the county, probably across most of the county.”
Otte noted there was not a lot of wind with the snow, and added the moisture will be good. It will provide great insulation for the wheat crop, and be a bit of a nuisance for ranchers that need to feed cattle. “Other than that we got by fairly lucky. At least we didn’t have a lot of ice.”
Otte said he didn’t believe any snowfall records were set.
The forecast had called for 4-7 inches of snow, but Otte added if anything forecasters underestimated the snowfall total a little bit.
