There were no injuries, but authorities estimated the residence belonging to Jeffrey Everitt, Milford, was a total loss. Milford Fire Chief Bill Draper estimated the loss in the $80,000 to $100,000 range.

Everitt was home at the time of the blaze, and did escape the residence. He called 911 for assistance.

Authorities confirmed the fire began in a basement fireplace in the chimney, and went up the wall and into the attic.

Milford firefighters were the first to arrive on scene  and Geary County firefighters were then called in to assist.

Everitt did have insurance coverage on the home.  The Red Cross did not have to be called in. Draper indicated Everitt had “family to stay with.”

Berges noted when rural firefighters arrived there was, “smoke coming out of the roof area and heat throughout the house.”
