The Geary County Rural Fire Department has added a new brush fire truck to it’s arsenal.

Garry Berges, Geary County Rural Fire Chief, picked up the new truck on Friday. The Department purchased a 2014 Ford extended cab pick up and had it outfitted with fire equipment.

“We bought the chassis separate and then we bought the equipment that goes on the bed as a separate deal and saved quite a bit of money by doing it that way,” Berges said.

The total cost of the truck when all is said and done according to Berges will be between $65,000 and $70,000. “We were able to move some money that we didn’t use last year and put it into this years budget for our vehicle replacement and then added money to it this year,” Berges said.

This is the first time the department has been able to purchase a new truck of that size in about 15 years Berges added, “We’ve got a lot of wear and tear on our trucks but slowly were starting to rotate some trucks around and get some new trucks.”

The truck is currently in Manhattan getting the light bars and radios hooked up but Berges expects it to be ready for service in about a week.
