Recent Cold Weather Snap Had Little to No Effect on Area Crops

The recent cold snap seen across the state has had no to little effect on winter crops in Geary County.

According to Chuck Otte, Geary County Research and Extensions Agent, the winter crops in Geary County did not appear to suffer any damage when temperatures dropped into single digits this past week.

“Fortunately we’ve had enough cold weather and there was enough soil moisture for the most part that it was fairly normal cool down, the wheat is dormant and fortunately I don’t think there’s been any damage at all yet,” Otte said.

He did say that there is still plenty of winter left though and prolonged dry weather and temperatures in the single digits could create some concern.

The cold weather also hasn’t effected livestock producers in Geary County to much as well. Otte did say though, that producers are putting out more food in order to give the livestock more energy to bear through the colder weather.
