A frigid evening was no match for the warmth of the holiday spirit as Soldiers, families and the Fort Riley community gathered to celebrate the holidays at the annual 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley Tree Lighting Ceremony Thursday evening at Ware Parade Field.

The event included the lighting of the tree by Fort Riley’s Family of the Year, a performance by a Fort Riley children’s choir, a performance by the Fort Riley Army Spouses Choir and a visit from Santa Claus himself.

Maj. Gen. Paul E. Funk II, commanding general, 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley, wished those in attendance happy holidays and asked that they remember service members in harm’s way. Funk remarked that the holiday season captures the spirit of selfless service found in the military and expressed his gratitude for those who serve.
