Governor Says Funding For Public Education has Increased

Governor Sam Brownback held a meeting Monday with a small group of school Superintendents and Legislatures to discuss public school funding.

Brownback reinforced that more money has gone into education spending, school-financeincluding million set aside for retirement.

A lower court ruling said that the state must increase it’s annual funding for public schools by $440 million. The lawsuit is now in front of the Kansas Supreme Court.

According to Ron Walker, Superintendent of Geary USD 475, Brownback’s statement goes against what the the court said when the case was first taken to them,”They said don’t try to pull the smoking mirror job and say, well look at all the money schools are getting by adding all the funds together.”

When asked if he sees an end to the lawsuit Walker said,”I think there will be a huge attempt to try to show that schools are receiving a lot of money by adding things in there that don’t go towards education.”

He mentioned some of those things being added would be retirement, capital outlay and LOB, which is paid for by local taxes.

“I think they will try to add a lot of things in there and say, look you’re getting all of this money, which none of it would be true. The base student aid is what we actually get,” Walker said.

The Kansas Supreme Court is expected to make a ruling in the case around the first of the year.
