The National Weather Service out of Topeka has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Republic, Washington, Marshall, Cloud, Clay, Riley, Ottawa, Dickinson and Geary Counties in effect from 9 a.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Friday.
Rain will transition to light freezing rain and drizzle Thursday morning into early afternoon. Sleet
is possible on Thursday afternoon changing to light snow from Thursday evening through early Friday evening.
Snow and sleet accumulations is expected at less than an inch with ice accumulations possible up to a tenth of an inch.
Garry Berges, Geary County Emergency Management Director, explained that some roadways can become slick,”The main concerns to begin with would be our overpasses and bridges which are going to start icing up. People need to start slowing down on all of the roadways and be prepared.”
Motorists should keep items such as blankets and flashlights in their vehicles in case they do get stranded. Berges also advised that motorists keep their cell phones charged in case of an emergency.
