After two unsuccessful votes to adopt a new animal control code for Junction City the issue was tabled during last nights Junction City City Commission meeting.
Following a lengthy discussion on a section of the proposed code that limits the number of
animals allowed in a household Commissioner Mick McCallister made a motion to adopt the new code without that section. McCallister and Commissioner Mike Ryan voted in favor of the motion with Mayor Cecil Aska and Commissioner Jim Sands opposed. Without a vote from Commissioner Pat Landes, who was absent from the meeting, the motion failed 2-2.
McCallister explained that he doesn’t like putting a number on how many animals a household can have,”I believe after looking at the ordinance, the ordinance was clear as to how to control whether its a nuisance, whether its odor, whether its barking. I thought that ordinance was clear enough.”
Commissioner Sands then moved to adopt the code as is. That motion failed as well with Commissioners McCallister and Ryan opposed and Mayor Aska and Commissioner Sands in favor.
Mayor Aska said the regulations were added to regulate those who are not responsible,” Its usually never about the responsible person that you end up trying to do stuff about, its about the irresponsible people that were trying to get a better handle on and that’s the unfortunate part.”
The issue was tabled until the next meeting when the entire Commission is expected to be present.
