The consideration to adopt a new Animal Control code in Junction City is on the agenda for Tuesday nights City Commission meeting.

Gerald Smith, City Manager, confirmed Monday that the commission will discuss it Tuesday night, “The animal code will be discussed. The City Commission, two weeks ago, decided to postpone a decision on that in order to give stakeholders an opportunity to review the final draft of the document. Those who are interested in coming to speak out will have the opportunity to do so.  Tomorrow (Tuesday) that will be brought forth.”

A committee spent over a year doing a near re-write of the code and first presented it to the City Commission during their October 15th meeting. At that meeting the commission requested some changes be made.

One of the changes included adding a grandfathering clause to the number of pets allowed in a home. The new code limits the number of pets in a home to five dogs, five cats and five ferrets. Those homes that currently exceed that number in any of the categories would be grandfathered in by having the animals registered with the city, under the condition that if one of the animals passes away it can not be replaced if that home is at or still over the five allowed per household.

The commission will meet at 7 p.m.  in the City Commission room on the second floor of the Municipal Building.
