Geary and Riley County Fire Departments responded to a request from Fort Riley for assistance on Sunday.geary county fire department

Garry Berges, Geary County Rural Fire Chief, reported that there were a couple of major grass fires on post, and Geary and Riley Counties were called for assistance just before 2 p.m. Sunday. “The fire was brought under control approximately 6:30. ” Mop up work continued after that time.

“Primarily the area of the fire is north of Ogden, stretches back toward the west for several miles, ” said Berges.

The gusty winds were a challenge in battling the blaze, said Berges “Hampered it quite a bit. They had a pretty good handle on part of it, then it would jump the road in front of them. It was just a constant battle. So we finally went to a what we call a back burn where we controlled the fire, let it burn into the major part of the fire.”

There were no injuries reported.

Berges did not the specific cause of the blaze but said  Geary County responded with five trucks, two staff vehicles, and approximately 15 personnel. He added there were approximately 50 personnel from Riley County that also provided assistance.
