Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Call Special Meeting

The Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a special meeting Tuesday morning to discuss the chambers recommendation on a proposed casino project in Junction City.

Representative Allan Rothlisberg has been working on legislation to get Geary County designated as a future location for achamber state owned casino.

Tom Weigand, Chamber CEO, said that the chamber wanted to get their “ducks in a row” on the issue prior to the City Commission possibly passing a resolution in support of the project during the Commissions Tuesday night meeting. The Chamber Board will discuss how they plan to play the casino issue, whether they will support it as a chamber or stand aside and let someone else lead it.

“We’ll take a vote on whether the support is their to move forward in this attempt,” Weigand said.

The Chamber sent out a survey to it’s members back in October and found out that 76 percent of the 169 who participated in the survey were in favor of the casino.

Weigand said the chamber is looking at the possible casino in a jobs investment and tourism aspect,”We want it to be a destination, a major casino similiar to the one maybe in Mulvane or the Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kansas.”

State Representative Allan Rothlisberg expects to get a hearing before a Kansas House committee in February on his proposed legislation to have Geary County designated as a future north central Kansas site for a casino.
