The Proposed Re-opening of a Rock Quarry Is on MPC Agenda Thursday

The Junction City Geary County Metropolitan Planning Commission is expected to take action on a proposal to re-open a rock quarry in Geary County Thursday night.

Jim Didas first approached the MPC in August seeking a conditional use permit to reopen and municipal buildingoperate a rock quarry on property located on the east side of Munson Road between Rucker Road and K-244 Highway in Geary County.

It has been continued each month since, according to Dave Yearout, Zoning Administrator. “The hope is that at the conclusion of the public hearing on Thursday, the Planning Commission will pass a recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners for final action.”

In October the board approved the continuance to Thursday’s meeting on the condition that at this meeting it will be either presented fully or a decision will be made on the facts that are presented.

The issue has drawn opposition from neighbors of the quarry citing concerns ranging from damage to their water wells from blasting to dust, noise, and traffic.

The meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the Municipal Building.
