About 40 people turned out for the Geary County Historical Societies 41st Annual meeting Tuesday night at the Geary County Historical Museum.

During this years meeting four members of the Historical Societies Board of Directors were re-appointed to new terms. Those members include current President of the Board, Florence Whitebread along with Jim Sands, Michelle Gunderson and Leona Garrison.

Following the brief meeting Dr. Robert Smith, Curator of the Fort Riley Calvary Museum, gave a history presentation of Fort Riley.

Dr. Smith started at the beginning and worked his way to the present. He even quoted Libby Custer, the wife of General George Custer, on her first remarks when arriving at Fort Riley in December of 1866,”It was my first view of a frontier post. I had either been afraid to confess my ignorance or so assured that there was one, but one variety of fort and the subject needed no investigation. Fort Riley Came upon me at a great surprise.”

This was the first meeting for Sarah Mopin, Museum Executive Director, since taking over this past February. Moppin said that she thought it was really great and has already started planning for next years meeting but isn’t ready to reveal all of what she has planned,”It will be a throw back to World War II and World War I and that’s the best I’m doing.”
