Deanna and Chuck Munson, David and Laura Munson are the co-owners of Munson Premium Angus Beef.

Deanna Munson said there was a sophisticated judging process with American Royal selected judges. She noted the judging is done in the K-State Sensory Testing laboratory in Olathe. “And the panel that does the judging taste samples that have been prepared blindly and uniformly by a chef to that there is total uniformity in the preparation of the steak, no additives, nothing.”

Munson Premium Angus Beef submitted two boneless ribeye steaks cut one and a half inches thick for the competition. Deanna said they had to be sent in a frozen state. “The two that we sent, actually we had two head of cattle that Chuck had selected by eye a number of months ago that we fed out. ” Munson added the only thing we did different that we always do is instead of dry aging them 14 days we did dry age these 16 days. He probably gave them perhaps a little different ration than we normally feed, but not that much difference on the feed ration.”

Judges ranged from the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University to the heads of major food companies and chefs from well known restaurants in Kansas City.

Munson Premium Angus Beef sells their beef products from a retail store on North Jackson in Junction City. They will be able to display the national champion banner for one year on their billboard near the 299 milepost on I-70 near Grandview Plaza.
