A Continuance is Being Sought on Public Hearing on Proposed Reopening of Rock Quarry

The request for a conditional use permit to reopen a former rock quarry site just west of Junction City is on the Metropolitan Planning Commission agenda Thursday night. But Zoning Administrator David Yearout has confirmed for JCPost.com that Jim Didas will request a continuance of the public hearing on the proposed permit for one month.

“That hearing was first held on the 8th of August, continued to September, continued again to the October meeting which would be this Thursday night and he is now requesting a continuance to the November meeting,” Yearout said.

Yearout explained that in the e-mail he received from Didas that he requested the continuance because he wasn’t fully prepared with the information that he wishes to submit to the MPC.

The issue has drawn opposition from neighbors of the quarry citing concerns ranging from damage to their water wells from blasting to dust, noise, and traffic.

The MPC can take action on the matter during Thursday nights meeting according to Yearout,”They did grant one continuance and its within their discretion to either move forward with the request based on the information submitted or they can continue it. It’s their call.”

The meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the Municipal Building.
