Fort Riley officials report approximately 7,000 people paid a visit to the Artillery Parade Field on post Saturday for Apple Day.

The annual event has been held on post since the 1980’s.
Activities ranged from Commanding General Mounted Color Guard demonstrations to the traditional sale of apple pies which were prepared by several hundred volunteers. The President of the Historical and Archeological Society Brenda Werner was thrilled at the rapid sale of the pies on Saturday. The sale of pies funds the Society’s activities. “We’ll have to calculate because when it comes down to the end whether we sell them by the slice or by the whole pie tends to be a little different, but that’ll vary, somewhere between 10 and 15 ( thousand dollars ).”
It was chilly, but still many people attended the activities. They ranged from a treasure hunt, petting zoo, and obstacle course to historical reenactments, static vehicle and aircraft displays, and demonstrations by military working dogs.
