Fort Riley Releases Statement on Possibility of Government Shutdown

Annual funding for the Federal Government expires Monday.

Congress has until midnight to prevent a lapse in appropriations to avert a possible government shutdown.

In a statement released by Col. Andrew Cole, Fort Riley Garrison Commander, he explained that even though Fort Riley leaders remain hopeful Congress will prevent the possible shutdown,” We must plan for the possibility that a lapse could occur at midnight tonight (Sept. 30).” He explained what a shutdown would mean for the home of the 1st Infantry Division,”A lapse would mean that a number of government, and Fort Riley, activities would cease due to a lack of appropriated funding.”

Not only would activities be cancelled but a number of civilian employees would be furloughed, Cole explained,” While active duty personnel would continue in a normal duty status, a large number (approximately 2,400) of appropriated fund civilian employees would be placed on furlough beginning at some point during the day on October 1, 2013 until further notice.”

Further information will be provided should the shutdown happen.

The Senate did adopt a bill that will pay members of the military in case the government shuts down.

The legislation is now sent to the White House for the President Barack Obama’s signature. It ensures that if the shut down does occur, members of the armed forces will receive their paychecks on time, however civilian workers will not.

The House passed the legislation early Sunday morning.
