The Geary Community Healthcare Foundation put on the 14th annual Fall Classic Golf Tournament Friday at Rolling Meadows Golf Course.
This year the foundation is raising money to fund the salary of the new certified athletic trainer at
Geary USD 475, Brandon Martino for one year. He is a 2009 Junction City High School graduate, and was a member of the 2008 state championship football team.
Jolana Montgomery-Matney, Executive Director of the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation explained that the athletic trainer will work with all student athletes in 8th grade and up. Martino was hired to manage a new impact concussion management software system that the foundation purchased with money donated by Ruth and Josephine Rago.
“This is the same system they use in NFL and major colleges use to be able to get a baseline on all of our athletes,” according to Montgomery-Matney.
She said that they will be finishing up the fall athletes this week. “We’ll have that baseline if they incur a head injury of any kind, working with their doctors and working with the athletic trainer, they can not come back and go back to their sport until they are 90% of what their baseline is.”
She went on to explain that the test the student athletes take is a cognitive test and not like an I.Q. test, ” This is spacial and cognitive and trying to put things in the right order and remembering what you saw. When you have a head injury you’re not going to do as well.”
The foundation was hoping to raise $25,000. The tournament did see a record number of golfers this year with 147 golfers. Montgomery-Matney said she believes they saw a record number because of what they are trying to raise money for,” The cause sometimes brings people out.”
