A Fort Riley private has been convicted in the stabbing death of another soldier and sentenced to life in prison without eligibility for parole.
A court martial panel at Fort Riley sentenced Pvt. 2 John Hughes Tuesday for the death of 21-year-old Pvt. 2 Thomas Lavrey, of West Seneca, N.Y.
Hughes also will be dishonorably discharged, will forfeit all pay and allowances, and have his rank reduced to E-1.
First Infantry Division Public Affairs confirmed that Hughes was convicted of Murder, Resisting Apprehension, False Official Statements, Larceny, Wrongful Appropriation and going AWOL.
The summation of the facts provided by the 1st Infantry Division Public Affairs: on May 13, 2012 Hughes murdered Private 2 Thomas Lavrey by stabbing him in the back of the neck with a knife in Lavrey’s barracks room on Fort Riley. He had stolen the murder weapon, and then after the murder stole a HMMWV that was later recovered off-post. When approached by the MP’s for the theft of the HMMWV, he resisted apprehension.
Hughes was in pretrial confinement from May 13, 2012 to September 10, 2013 at the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He will now be confined at the U. S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth.
In accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Hughes can request clemency from the commander that convened the court martial, the commander of the First Infantry Division and Fort Riley.
