The annual 9 / 11 Commemoration Ceremony at Fort Riley was held on Wednesday. It honored and remembered those who were killed Sept. 11, 2001 and recognized the bravery and heroism of those who answered the nation’s call to remain On Point defending America in the aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon 12 years ago.
Major General Paul Funk II, Fort Riley Commanding General, spoke about the nations resilience during the ceremony,” Our ability to remain resilient and unified in time of need has enabled our country to always adapt to adversity.”
Funk said that the nations resiliency has driven the rest of the world to expect our hero’s to respond to the call of others less fortunate, “Our nation has risen to every challenge within a tangible character not found anywhere else in the world.”
The Global War on Terrorism Monument at Fort Riley is a small replica of the twin towers on a pentagon-shaped base. It bears the names of Fort Riley soldiers who have given their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq.
This year four names were added to the monument, bringing the total number of Soldiers honored on the monument to 208. The new heroes who were recognized were Capt. James D. Nehl, Staff Sgt. Matthew H. Stiltz, Sgt. Joseph A. Richardson, and Sgt. Channing B. Hicks.
