Last weekend the Corp of Engineers at Milford Lake placed signage along the north end of the lake warning visitors of possible blue green algae as a precaution.

On Tuesday the Kansas Department of Health and Environment collected samples at the Milford State Park beach and Military Marina cove areas. Those tests came back under advisory levels and KDHE will not be placing Milford Lake under any restrictions at this time.

“Last week we had a little bit of concern. It looked like right before the holiday weekend that we had some algae that was starting to gather and collect up at the north end of the lake,” said RJ Harms, Project Manager for the Corp of Engineers at Milford Lake.

The corp placed advisory signs around the north end of the lake but they will be removed. So far this summer the lake has fared pretty well due to cooler temperatures. “We had one week where we were under a full advisory and one week where we were under a partial advisory. I think a lot of that has to do with the cooler temperatures that we saw in late July and early August, when it was only in the low 80’s,” Harms said.

Milford Lake is sitting about one and a half feet high at the moment and Harms said they plan to keep it at that level through out the fall.
