The sale of 24 lots in last week’s delinquent tax sale in Geary County generated just $4,676.  So what does the county do with the remaining 260-plus lots from that sale where delinquent taxes are owed?

Ben Bennett, Geary County Commission Chairman, said the governing body discussed that with Steve Opat, county counselor.  Bennett noted they were informed the lots could be resold. “If someone wanted to buy them we have the right to sell them. We could possible attach them to the next bank of sales we have coming up a little later.” Bennett added right now he does not know the next course of action. “They don’t go directly to the county, however they’re our responsibility is what he said.”

Bennett noted the taxes could ride on the lots for years, and that would create difficulty for both the city and county.  The commissioner expects more discussion on the lots in the future.

The partially developed housing lots are primarily on the northwest side of Junction City. They were part of the city’s plan to develop housing lots in anticipation of population with Fort Riley’s buildup, but that growth did not completely materialize to the extent anticipated.
