County Moves to Eliminate Termites from Extension Office Building
Geary County is taking measures to eradicate termites from the Geary County Extension Office Building.
County Commission Chairman Ben Bennett said they were discovered by Extension Agent Chuck Otte. “Exterminators are going to treat it. It’s going to cost us $1,013, and then we’re going to enter into a maintenance agreement with them for $185 ( per year ). That maintenance agreement is designed to keep the termites out of the building.
During an Extension Department report to the commission the governing body learned the spring and summer agriculture crops are unpredictable at this point because of all the rain, and problems that may cause for the growth process. That could have a negative impact on yields.
The Extension Department will have an exofficio non-voting position on the Live Well Geary County.

Summit Addressed Veterans Transitioning Out of the Military
The Kansas Secretary of Commerce, Antonio J. Soave, is pointing to built-in elements of a workforce coming out of Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth and McConnell Air Force Base. Soave was in Junction City for a military workforce summit on Friday.
“Of course we have been working diligently and continuously with Brigadier General Patrick Frank in order to make sure that employers, potential employers really understand the benefits and values that essentially come with this workforce that is essentially associated with the military.” Soave and Frank, Deputy Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division, were the keynote speakers at the Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center in Junction City.
Soave noted veterans have a built-in value system. “Loyalty, dedication, honesty, dignity, honor. All of those components are highly valued of course by employers across the state.”
Numerous topics were covered during the summit including industry overviews such as cyber security, aviation and construction. There were breakout sessions on topics ranging from military skillset compatibility and employment and social media to benefits of employing the military spouse.
Man convicted in 1977 murder at Wichita State dies in prison

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man who fatally stabbed a student on the Wichita State University campus 40 years ago has died.
Leonard Bell attacked 19-year-old Julie Ladd on May 15, 1977, when she interrupted him as he was trying to steal money from the coin-operated laundry machines in her basement dormitory.
Bell already was serving a life term in Colorado for a 1981 killing when he was linked to Ladd’s death seven years later. A Sedgwick County judge imposed a similar sentence for Ladd’s slaying and ordered it be served consecutively to the Colorado case.
A Kansas Department of Corrections spokeswoman says Bell hadn’t yet begun serving the life term he received for Ladd’s stabbing when he died last month in a Colorado prison. He was 62.

Jasmine Hunt was the member of the Senior class of 2017 honored Wednesday evening at Junction City High School for having the top grade point average at the end of her JCHS career.
She received a huge ovation from the audience. It was an emotional accomplishment. “When she first said it was going to be awarded to the student with the highest gpa I almost freaked out. I don’t know, it’s not that I didn’t think that I was, but it was just a whirlwind of emotion at that point.”
Hunt received the Bonecutter – Geary Community Schools Foundation Scholarship of $1,000.
Nicholas Dombrowski was recognized for having the second highest grade point average. He was presented with the JCEA scholarship, which carries a value of $500.
The total value of all scholarships presented to the Senior Class of 2017 at JCHS was calculated at approximately $2,150,000.
Pat Landes Returns to City Commission Seat
Pat Landes returned to his seat at the Junction City Commission meeting Tuesday night.
Landes has been absent for several weeks due to a personal crisis that involved a life threatening illness.
He thanked the members of the public who reached out to him in cards, prayers and well wishes during his illness. “We have a great community that really reached out with all their thoughts and prayers and helped me pull through my life threatening medical crisis.” He added he is forever indebted to them.”
Landes discussed the situation that occurred in late March, noting he had suffered a perforation of his colon. “I went into septic shock, where all my organs started shutting down.” The diseased segment of his colon was removed at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. ” I was on a ventilator in a coma for two weeks before I came out of that.” It took time for Landes to begin to be able to stand up and walk again. it was noted that during the course of his illness he lost approximately 35 pounds, but he is now on the road to recovery and is working to regain his strength and endurance.
That illness occurred just two days after an earlier successful surgery to remove a boney mass, a benign tumor, in the roof of his left orbit in his eye. Landes does not believe the two illnesses were connected.
Landes has not yet returned to his work with the Radiology & Nuclear Medicine Group as Chief Radiologist at Geary Community Hospital, but indicated he may be able to do so one or two days a week this summer.
