USGS: Another strong earthquake shakes Reno County

RENO COUNTY — Another earthquake shook residents in south-central Kansas early Sunday. The quake at 3:45 a.m. measured a magnitude 4.1 and was centered approximately 3 miles west of South Hutchinson, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

This follows six quakes in Reno County over a 24-hour period including a 4.2 magnitude quake just before 8 a.m. Friday that was felt over much of the state and that caused some minor damage.

The other five quakes all were 3.1 or smaller, according to the U.S.GS.

Police evacuate Kan. Walmart store after suspicious package found

LEAVENWORTH COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities evacuated a Walmart store in Bonner Springs late Wednesday.

According to a social media report from Bonner Springs Police, someone left a suspicious  package in the store 12801 Kansas Avenue. Police placed the store on lockdown and asked the public to avoid the area.

Following an investigation, the package was deemed safe and the store was cleared, according o police. The Walmart will resume normal operations Thursday.

Sheriff: 3 captured after man escapes Kan. jail, chase and crash

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspects after a man ran from deputies at the Sedgwick County Jail.

Just before 4p.m. Friday, 28-year-old Victor Walker was in the Sedgwick County Jail lobby when deputies discovered he had an active felony warrant for his arrest, according to Lt. Tim Myers.

Walker was handcuffed and placed under arrest for the felony warrant.  As the deputy was collecting Walker’s property from him he fled the lobby.  As he ran out the door, he struck two citizens with the door.  The citizens sustained minor injuries.

Walker ran to a Black Chevy Camaro parked on Water Street.  Walker got into the drivers’ seat and drove away from the jail.  As he drove away, the Camaro struck three parked vehicles and drove over the foot of a 41-year-old Sheriff’s Office Sergeant.  Walker drove north on Water Street, went east on Pine, and then turned south on Topeka Street.  Walker drove south on Topeka to Kellogg, and then drove east on Kellogg to Oliver.  As Walker was driving on the off ramp for Oliver, he struck two additional vehicles at the intersection before the Camaro crashed into the northeast traffic signal.

Police arrested Walker and booked him in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on requested charges of Aggravated Battery LEO, 2 counts of Aggravated Assault, Felony Obstruct, Aggravated Escape Custody, Felony Evade and Elude, Possession of Marijuana and the Felony Warrant.

Charles L. Patton II, a 37,  was the front seat passenger in the Camaro.  Patton was booked for Aggravated Battery LEO, 2 counts of Aggravated Assault, Felony Obstruct, Aiding Escape, and Felony Evade and Elude.

Camille L. Hollands, a 38 year old black female, was a rear seat passenger in the Camaro.  Hollands was booked for Possession of Marijuana.

Arlene Louise Wood

Arlene Louise Wood, age 79 of Wakefield, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at the Geary Community Hospital in Junction City.

She was born on October 19, 1939 in Milford, the daughter of Robert and Ruby (Koerner) Berry.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the Milford Congregational Church.

KHP identifies woman who died after crash with a semi

REENWOOD COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 3p.m. Tuesday in Greenwood County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Chevy passenger car driven by Anita Lucy, 50, Salem, Arkansas, was eastbound, on U.S. 54 Highway, in the outside (south) lane leaving Eureka.

The driver attempted to pass a 2001 International semi as the outside lane was coming to an end.

The Chevy left the roadway to the right, onto the gravel shoulder, and the driver overcorrected to the left in front of the semi and began traveling, eastbound, sideways.

The Chevy then crossed the eastbound lane, the center line, and the westbound lane. The semi struck the Chevy’s passenger side.

EMS transported Lucy to the Greenwood County Hospital where she died. The semi driver John Q. Thompson, 30, Wichita, was not injured. Lucy was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas felon, teen arrested for burglary of automotive business

COWLEY COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating suspects in connection with a business burglary in Arkansas City.

Just after at 8 a.m. July 31 police responded to a report of a burglary at Tim’s Automotive, 401 E. Madison Avenue in Arkansas City, according to a media release. They discovered someone had forced entry into the business and stolen items estimated at more than $16,000. 

Following on investigation police executed a search warrant for a vehicle being held at a local towing business.  Evidence gathered during this search led them to apply for another search warrant for a residence in the 400 block of South First Street.

This followed an additional search in the 800 block of South Summit Street, during which officers gathered additional evidence in the case and in the 400 block of East Monroe Avenue.

During the search of this residence,  police arrested Christopher Lee Fischer, 41, of Arkansas City, on suspicion of business burglary. A search of Fischer’s East Monroe residence turned up evidence allegedly tied to the burglary, as well as drug possession.  Fischer remains in custody on one felony count each of burglary of a non-dwelling, criminal damage to property and theft of property or services totaling greater than $1,000 in value, as well as one misdemeanor count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. He also was arrested on three Cowley County District Court warrants for misdemeanor failure to appear. 

Police also arrested a 17-year-old Arkansas City body on suspicion of burglary, criminal damage to property, possession of stolen property and theft. He was released to the custody of his mother. Additional charges are expected for other individuals allegedly involved in this incident and those charges will be filed through the Cowley County Attorney’s Office.

Fischer has two previous drug convictions, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Police: 10-year-old took mom’s SUV to go to McDonald’s

KANSAS CITY  —A 10-year-old girl who wanted some fast food Wednesday morning took her mother’s SUV while the mom was sleeping and crashed into another vehicle.

Just before 8a.m., police were called to 12th and Olive in Kansas City on a wreck between a Chevy Tahoe and a Honda Pilot, according to a media release. They were surprised to learn that the driver of the Tahoe was a 10-year-old.

Officers learned that when the girl woke up, she wanted to get McDonald’s to eat. Her mother was still sleeping, so the girl took the Tahoe herself. She drove a couple of miles before getting lost. She attempted to turn at 12th and Olive, but since she was an unlicensed 10-year-old, she failed to yield to the Honda coming in the opposite direction.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage, as did an electrical utility box and a stop sign. The girl was transported to the hospital with minor bumps and bruises. The other driver was not injured. The girl did not make it to McDonald’s.

 

Kansas man dies after motorcycle rear-ends pickup

LINN COUNTY — One person died in an accident just before 9:30p.m. Monday in Linn County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by Edward W. Lewis, 56, Blue Mound, was eastbound on Kansas 31 Highway two miles west of Blue Mound.

The motorcycle crested a hill and rear-ended a 1999 Ford pickup driven by Jacob R. Robinson, 17, Mound City.

Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Schneider Funeral Home.
Robinson was not injured. Lewis was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Kansas man, 15-year-old dead after SUV rollover crash

WILSON COUNTY — Two people died in an accident just before 11p.m. Saturday in Wilson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1995 Ford Explorer driven by Monica Rader, 38, Delta, Co., was northbound on Kansas 39 fifteen miles west of Chanute.

The driver swerved to miss an animal in the roadway. The SUV rolled multiple times, entered the east ditch and the three passengers were ejected from the vehicle.

Ronald A. Hudson, 35, Thayer, and Malachi Hill, 15, Chanute, were pronounced dead at the scene. Rader and Keishawn Valenzuela, 14, Chanute, were transported to Wesley Medical Center. None of occupants were wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.
