65-year-old Kan. man linked to Mexican drug cartel sentenced

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A Kansas man who was a major heroin dealer in the Kansas City area has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.

Dennis McLallen, 65, of Overland Park also was ordered to pay an $850,000 judgment, which was the estimated amount of money he made from drug sales.

He admitted that he distributed more than 10 kilograms of heroin.

Investigators say McLallen and his wife were among 18 people charged after an investigation by federal agents and Kansas City and St. Louis police.

The 18 suspects included sources in Mexico who supplied drugs to McLallen.

He pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to distribute heroin, conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to carry firearms during the commission of drug crime.

Police K9 helps officers catch wanted Kan. drug suspect

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a wanted suspect on new charges after an early morning traffic stop.

Just before 1a.m. Thursday police stopped a vehicle in the 1000 Block of Heizer in Great Bend, according to a media release from police chief David Bailey.

The driver made contact with the driver identified as 39-year-old Eugene Black. He was wanted on a number of arrest warrants, according to police.

Officers also deployed the police department’s K-9 Laser which helped officers find illegal drugs in the vehicle. Offices seized the drugs and weapons.

Black was jailed for possession of meth, marijuana and cocaine within 1000 feet of a school. He is also facing a weapons charge, according to police. Black is being held on a $100,000 Bond.

He has previous convictions for stalking, theft, battery, violation of a protection order, flee/attempt to elude and drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Kan. deputies find 11 pounds of pot during I-70 traffic stop

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after an I-70 traffic stop.

Just after 11:30a.m. Wednesday, deputies stopped a vehicle near Urish Road for a license plate registration violation, according to   Sergeant Todd Stallbaumerl.

The suspect identified as 29-year-old Robert C. Rodriguez, refused to follow a deputy’s instructions. Another officer tased Rodriguez.

He was taken to a local hospital for a medical examination before being booked for possession of marijuana with the intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia. Deputies reported finding 11.5 pounds of marijuana worth approximately $20,000 inside the vehicle

Rodriguez is being held without bond.

NW Kansas dust storm slows deputies working accident

THOMAS COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities in northwest Kansas battled high winds and blowing dirt responding to an injury accident on U.S. 24 east of Colby Tuesday.

Due to limited visibility, the first deputy on the scene of the accident almost struck one of the disabled vehicles, according to a social media report from the Thomas County Sheriff. The deputy was only able to drive 10 miles-per-hour and didn’t see the vehicle.

A passerby helped the occupants of both vehicles and drove into a field nearby to avoid another accident. A third vehicle did strike one of the other two vehicles but did not remain on scene.

Authorities did not release names of those in the accident or if they required treatment.

Sheriff: Kansas teen dies after crash with cement truck

BARTON COUNTY — A Kansas teen died in an accident just after noon Tuesday in Barton County.

The Barton County Sheriff’s office reported a 2007 Saturn Ion driven by Shealee A. Stover, 18, rural Olmitz, was westbound on Northeast 30 Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at Washington Avenue.

A northbound International cement truck driven by Billy Love, 39, Great Bend, struck the Saturn. Both vehicle continued north of Washington. The Saturn came to rest on its roof. The cement truck rolled onto its passenger side.

Stover was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir. Love was not injured. Both drivers were wearing properly restrained at the time of the crash, according to Bellendir.

Kan. pair wanted for alleged theft, drugs jailed after chase

BARTON COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on drug charges.

Just after 12:30a.m. Sunday, a Barton County Deputy stopped a 1998 Jeep Cherokee in the 900 block of North US 281 highway, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

The deputy noted the male passenger in the vehicle was Michael Moore of Great Bend and was wanted on an outstanding warrant from The Kansas Department of Corrections.

Moore exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. As he was fleeing Moore was observed to be throwing items to the ground as he ran, according to Bellendir.

The items were found to be methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The deputy took 27-year-old Moore into custody.

He was booked on charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony obstruction and a no bond warrant from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The deputy also arrested the driver Mark Ray, 30 of Great Bend.

Ray was charged with possession of methamphetamine and driving while suspended.  Ray posted a $10,000 bond.

Moore remains in jail in lieu of a $100,000 bond as well as the no bond warrant from KDOC.

On April 7, police arrested Ray, Moore and a woman in connection with a robbery at Dunham Sports in Hutchinson.  Ray made a court appearance in the case Friday. Moore skipped the court appearance.

Kansas teen dies after car lands in river

SEDGWICK COUNTY — One person died in an accident early Sunday in Sedgwick County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Ford Fusion driven by Lexus A. Lemuz, 18, Wichita, was eastbound on Kansas 96 just east of West Street.

The vehicle traveled off the road to the left, struck a guardrail and continued eastbound in the ditch.

The vehicle then vaulted over an embankment, struck a fence post and came to rest in the Arkansas river.

Lemuz was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the Sedgwick County Forensics Center. She was not wearing a seat belt, according the KHP.   Authorities are still unsure on the time of the crash.

Suspect in Kansas bank robbery jailed in Oklahoma

DEWEY COUNTY, OK —The suspect wanted in connection with Monday’s robbery at Newton’s First Bank south branch is in custody.

On Thursday night, police arrested Martin L. Paris, 50, in Seiling, Oklahoma, in the northwest part of the state, according to a media release.

A tip from someone who recognized Paris from media coverage led police to the motel where he was staying. He was taken into custody without incident.

Paris is now being held at the Dewey County Jail. He had been on federal probation in Oklahoma for previous bank robberies.

The robbery in Newton occurred Monday evening at about 5:45 p.m., when a man entered the bank, 1404 South Kansas Avenue, and passed a note to the staff. The man left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash. No weapon was displayed.

Kansas man dies in motorcycle crash

JOHNSON COUNTY —  A Kansas man died in an accident just before 4p.m. Thursday in Johnson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Harley Davidson driven by Donald Attebery, 59, Shawnee, was northbound on  Interstate 435.

The driver  lost control of the motorcycle as he took the exit for eastbound Shawnee Mission Parkway and left the road.

Attebery was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Frontier Forensics.
