Royals claim right-hander Greene off waivers from the Cardinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals claimed Conner Greene off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals and designated fellow right-hander Burch Smith for assignment on Monday.

The 23-year-old Greene spent last season at Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis, going 4-5 with a 4.09 ERA in 40 appearances. He also made nine relief appearances for Surprise in the Arizona Fall League, where the Royals got a close look at him.

Smith was acquired during last year’s winter meeting draft. He went 1-6 with a 6.92 ERA in 38 games for Kansas City, making six starts in spot duty last season.

K-State selected to play in 2019 Fort Myers Tip-off

MANHATTAN, Kan.
 – Kansas State has been selected to participate in the 2019 Rocket Mortgage by Quicken Loans Fort Myers Tip-Off, which is set for November 2019 at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers, Florida.

The complete bracket, including game dates, match-ups and television broadcast times, will be announced later.

K-State will be joined in the tournament field by the Missouri Valley’s Bradley, the Big Ten’s Northwestern and the ACC’s Pittsburgh. The quartet are off to a collective 22-2 record in 2018-19, including undefeated marks by K-State (6-0) and Pittsburgh (6-0) and just one loss apiece for Bradley (6-1) and Northwestern (4-1).

Each team will play four games in the Tip-Off – the first two at on-campus sites and the final two rounds in Fort Myers. K-State will play two home games at Bramlage Coliseum against opponents to be determined.

“We are looking forward to the challenge of playing in a quality non-conference tournament like the Las Vegas Invitational,” said head coach Bruce Weber. “We always want to challenge our team in the preseason with quality opponents and this tournament has a really good field.”

The tournament will once again be staged at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena, a $28 million state-of-the-art arena where Boston College defeated Loyola Chicago to capture the inaugural Fort Myers Tip-Off Championship. The Eagles knocked off Wyoming, 88-76, and the Ramblers beat Richmond, 82-66, in the semifinals, while the Cowboys won the third-place game with a 68-66 win over the Spiders. All the games were televised on FS1.

Fans can immediately begin planning to catch all the action at the 2019 Fort Myers Tip-Off by visiting the tournament’s website at www.fortmyerstipoff.com to sign up for updates regarding ticket presales and travel packages, good for access to all four games of the 2019 Tournament. Kansas State men’s basketball defeats Lehigh

KSU Limestone

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Dean Wade knew Kansas State was in need of a spark, and he took it upon himself to provide it.

Wade scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, Barry Brown added 16 and No. 12 Kansas State beat Lehigh 77-58 on Saturday.

“The first half we weren’t playing with any emotion or energy so my main focus was to do that,” Wade said. “I just wanted to be aggressive, but smart.”

The Wildcats (6-0) controlled the second half after the Mountain Hawks hung around and trailed by two at halftime.

“I think we wore them down as the game went on,” coach Bruce Weber said. “I told our guys these guys are pretty good and I didn’t think we played very good defense in the first half.”

Kamau Stokes scored 10 points, including two first-half 3-pointers, but the Wildcats continued to struggle with their long-distance shooting at home, making 6 of 20 3-point attempts.

James Karnik had 15 points and eight rebounds for Lehigh (4-2), and Pat Andree scored 12. Lehigh compiled 16 turnovers and made just nine field goals in the second half, shooting 28 percent. Lehigh shot 54 percent in the first half.

The Wildcats scored 18 points off Lehigh’s turnovers.

“Our defense is always something we take pride in,” Brown said. “We just focused on getting stops every time and we were able to get some easy baskets off those.”

Brown converted a three-point play to give K-State a 50-40 lead with 14 minutes remaining. That was part of a 12-5 run by the Wildcats that gave them a 57-45 lead.

Kansas State led 37-35 at halftime as neither team build a lead larger than five in the first 20 minutes. The Wildcats struggled against the Mountain Hawks’ matchup zone.

“We don’t see that very often and it’s even a hard thing to practice,” Weber said. “We needed to move the basketball and look inside and keep it going. They got us a little stagnant at times, but once we settled down we were able to find some things.”

Kansas State is off to its best start since 2004-05, when it won its first eight games. The Wildcats face Marquette next Saturday in their first road game of the season.

“This is a chance to take a big step as a team, but Marquette is a very good team,” Weber said. “They beat Louisville and played Kansas well, so it’s going to be a tough test.”

Iowa State rallies to stun K-State

AMES, Iowa (AP) — For Iowa State, it felt like yet another inexplicable loss to Kansas State might be inevitable.

Then a fumble flipped in the air and fell right into Mike Rose’s hands, and the Cyclones’ bad luck against the Wildcats seemed to wash away.

David Montgomery ran for three touchdowns, including the winner with 4:34 to go, and 25th-ranked Iowa State rallied from 17 down in the fourth quarter to stun Kansas State 42-38 and snap a 10-game skid against the Wildcats on Saturday night.

Montgomery had 149 yards rushing for the Cyclones (7-4, 6-3 Big 12), who clinched their best-ever finish in the Big 12.

Down 38-21, Iowa State scored twice in just 1:44 early in the fourth — on Brock Purdy’s short TD pass and a 21-yard fumble return by Rose after Willie Harvey forced it — to pull to 38-35.

The made a stop, and Montgomery’s 18-yard touchdown run gave Iowa State an improbable lead.

“This team has never disappointed me,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “We’re not flashy. We’re not pretty. But you better not count us out.”

Kansas State’s (5-7, 3-6) fate was sealed when a long pass to Dalton Schoen deep in Iowa State territory glanced off his fingertips with 1:20 left.

The Wildcats took control by going 92 yards on eight plays after picking off Purdy, opening up a 31-21 lead on Skylar Thompson’s 9-yard TD pass to Chabastin Taylor late in the third. K-State’s Kevion McGee then intercepted Purdy again, and Isaiah Zuber’s second TD grab of the game made it 38-21 early in the fourth.

Purdy redeemed himself down the stretch though, finishing with 337 yards passing and two touchdowns in what Campbell said was his best game yet.

Thompson threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score, and Alex Barnes rushed for 184 yards and a TD for the Wildcats. Barnes rushed for at least 100 yards in his last four games, the longest such streak for a Wildcat since Darren Sproles had a five-game streak in 2003.

“I’ve never lost a ballgame that way. I’ll have to dissect it,” Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said. “I can’t tell you what my feelings are right now.”

KU wins NIT Season Tip-Off championship

Dedric Lawson had 24 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, and No. 2 Kansas rallied to beat No. 5 Tennessee 87-81 in overtime in the NIT Season Tip-Off title game early Saturday.

Lagerald Vick scored 15 points, with eight straight during a crucial stretch for the Jayhawks’ comeback, and assisted on an alley-oop to Lawson that made it 78-73 with 2:39 left in overtime. Lawson was named the tournament MVP.

Tennessee’s Admiral Schofield had 21 points and six rebounds while Grant Williams had 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists before fouling out. Jordan Bone added 16 points for the Volunteers (4-1).

Bone skipped back to the bench after hitting a 3-pointer to end the first half and put Tennessee up 33-31. The Volunteers led by as many as nine points in the second half before Kansas (5-0) stormed back.

Texas Gets by Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Sam Ehlinger and No. 11 Texas made enough plays to put away Kansas.

Next up is a much bigger challenge.

Ehlinger threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score, and the Longhorns beat the Jayhawks 24-17 on Friday to clinch a spot in the Big 12 title game.

Texas (9-3, 7-2, No. 15 CFP) opened a 24-7 lead on Cameron Dicker’s 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, but Kansas responded with Peyton Bender’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Daylon Charlot and recovered the ensuing onside kick.

After Gabriel Rui made it a one-score game with a 45-yard field goal with 1:37 remaining, the Jayhawks (3-9, 1-8) were unable to recover another onside kick and the Longhorns closed it out from there.

“We treated this game like a semifinal, if you will, win and advance,” coach Tom Herman said. “And our guys found a way to win and advance.”

Tre Watson finished with 79 yards on 14 carries as Texas earned its third consecutive victory. The Longhorns will face the winner of Friday night’s showdown between No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 12 West Virginia in the Big 12 championship.

“We put a little cushion out for us there towards the end, but we knew they weren’t going away,” Herman said.

“They made some really good plays down the stretch, but we made just enough to seal the deal.”

Kansas dropped its last four games in David Beaty’s final season as Jayhawks coach. Les Miles takes over the downtrodden program after he was hired on Sunday.

Beaty leaves Kansas with a 6-42 record. But the final of his four seasons in charge included three wins, a conference victory over TCU and the end of the Jayhawks’ 46-game road losing streak.

“I want to thank our team and I want to thank all the Jayhawks out there for having a chance to represent you,” Beaty said. “It’s been fun.”

Ehlinger threw two interceptions, one in the second quarter to Najee Stevens-McKenzie and one late to Shak Taylor. He had gone 10 straight games without an interception after throwing two in the season opener against Maryland.

Ehlinger played through a shoulder injury he aggravated last week after originally coming down with the issue back in October. But he downplayed the significance.

Depaul defeats Kansas State in women’s basketball

CANCUN, Mexico (AP) — Mart’e Grays and Dee Bekelja each scored 12 points and No. 16 DePaul beat Kansas State 79-59 on Friday in the Cancun Challenge.

Bekelja scored 10 of her points in the first half as DePaul jumped out to a 45-20 advantage and Grays’ 3-pointer with 6:30 remaining extended the lead to 69-47.

Ashton Millender added 11 points for DePaul (3-1), which plays No. 14 Syracuse on Saturday. The Blue Demons were 12 of 40 from 3-point range, while Kansas State was just 2 of 12.

DePaul outscored Kansas State 18-6 at the end of the first quarter for a 21-12 lead, and the Blue Demons built a lead as high as 29 points in the third quarter.

Jasauen Beard scored 14 of her 17 points in the second half for Kansas State (3-2), and Peyton Williams had 10 points and six rebounds.
