Moustakas’ HR in 13th lifts Royals past Mariners

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Mike Moustakas homered to lead off the 13th inning, lifting the Kansas City Royals to a 7-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday.

Moustakas homered to right on an 0-2 pitch from Chance Ruffin (0-1), who had not pitched in the majors since 2011.

Louis Coleman (3-0), the eighth Kansas City pitcher, retired the only batter he faced in the top of the 13th.

Kansas City rallied from five runs down and led 6-5 in the ninth inning before Raul Ibanez homered off Greg Holland into the Mariners’ bullpen with two outs to tie the score. It was Holland’s first blown save since May 6 to end his streak of 31 consecutive saves.

Billy Butler went 5 for 5, matching his career high in hits for the Royals, while Emilo Bonifacio went 4 for 6 for his first four-hit game since July 4, 2009.

Chiefs Fisher, Jags Joeckel Ready for Debuts

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs had offensive tackle Eric Fisher rated No. 1 on their draft board. The Jacksonville Jaguars had fellow offensive tackle Luke Joeckel rated first on their board.

Both of the teams got what they wanted in April.

Now, the Chiefs and Jaguars will get a good idea who might have fared best when Fisher and Joeckel make their NFL debuts. Kansas City visits Jacksonville on Sunday with both players set to start at right tackle for teams coming off 2-14 seasons.

Fisher and Joeckel have both been slowed by injuries during the preseason, but they’ve showed flashes when they’ve been on the field. Chiefs coach Andy Reid and Jaguars coach Gus Bradley both said Wednesday that they’re happy with the way things worked out.

Equestrian Team to Provide Preview

The Kansas State Equestrian will conduct their Purple – White scrimmage at 9 a.m. Sunday at Timbercreek Stables.

The Wildcats are coming off a season which saw the Western team take home its third Reserve National Championship in four years. K-State returns several key riders including team captains Kelly Bovaird, Jordan Cox,  Madison Wayda, and Rachel Webster.

Admission to Sunday’s event is free to the public.

Jaguars QB Could Be a Game Day Decision

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – A decision on Blaine Gabbert’s return from a broken thumb could stretch until game day.

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said after practice Wednesday that he “saw some glimpses at the end where (Gabbert) was starting to get into a little bit more of a rhythm.” But Bradley added that his quarterback decision “very easily could” last until before Sunday’s game against Kansas City.

Bradley says: “We’ve got some decisions to make. I know he feels better every day, so I think we’re going to have to get as much time as we can to evaluate this.”

Gabbert sustained a hairline fracture in his right thumb during the team’s second preseason game. Gabbert sat out the final two exhibitions, and team doctors thought he would be healthy enough to play against the Chiefs.

Snyder Promises Change as K-State Tries to Rebound

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said Tuesday that he plans to use quarterback Daniel Sams more after the sophomore sat for most of the Wildcats’ loss to North Dakota State last week.

Snyder said that Sams had a “great practice” on Monday and deserves to be on the field when Kansas State tries to bounce back on Saturday night against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Sams was in a race with junior college transfer Jake Waters to be the starter most of fall camp. He was beaten out by Waters, who played nearly all the snaps against the Bison.

Waters threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns, but he was also intercepted twice. Sams only played a couple of downs, though he did run 17 yards for a touchdown.

Royals Top Mariners 3-1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Felix Hernandez lost his fourth straight start and Will Smith struck out a career high eight to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Monday.

The Mariners right-hander hasn’t lost four straight starts since 2008. He also left in the seventh inning with a cramp in his lower back.

Smith (2-1) pitched 4 1-3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the victory, allowing just one hit, after starter Danny Duffy failed to make it through four innings. Five of Smith’s strikeouts took only three pitches.

Greg Holland pitched a one-hit ninth for his 37th save in 39 opportunities.
