Junction City to Host Topeka High in basketball

The Junction City Blue Jay and Lady Jay basketball teams are hosting Topeka High Tuesday night.

Junction City enters the girls contest 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial League, while Topeka High is 4-3 and 1-3.jcb

Lady Jay coach Nate Parks noted Mandy Madden of Topeka High is a good player. “She’s worked her way up the ranks, and we’ve got to make sure we’re trying to limit her touches as much as we can, but, yeah, it’s going to be more about us, taking care of what we do.”

In the boys contest the Blue Jays enter 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Trojans are 3-1 and 1-2.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle said about Topeka High, “They play physical, they’re active, they’re very athletic. They’re not very big, which is going to give us some challenges.” Battle added the Trojans want to run.

Both games can be heard on the Talk of JC, KJCK AM. The girls game broadcast begins at 5:47 p.m. followed by the boys contest.

K-State to Host Oklahoma

The 25th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners come to Bramlage Coliseum to meet the Kansas State Wildcats in men’s Big 12 basketball Tuesday night.wildcat

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

The Sooners are led by former Wildcat player and coach Lon Kruger. They enter the contest after giving the Iowa State Cyclones their first loss of the season on Saturday. The Sooners are 13-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while Kansas State is 12-4 and 2-1.

Oklahoma is averaging a Big 12-best 87 points on 46.2 percent shooting, including 38 percent from 3-point range.  Senior Cameron Clark leads the OU offense and the Big 12 in scoring at 18.3 points per game, while shooting 46.7 Percet from the field and 42.2 percent from 3-point range.

K-State fell out of the Associated Press Top 25 on Monday after losing to Kansas last Saturday 86-60. That loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Wildcats.

Hubert and Heit to Play in All Star Games

According to k-statesports.com Kansas State running back John Hubert and long snapper Marcus Heit will compete in postseason all-star games.

Both players will play in the Medal of Honor Bowl on Saturdayat Johnson Hagood Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday. Heit will also compete in the Reese’s Senior Bowl Jan. 25 in Mobile, Alabama.

 

KSU Women’s Basketball at Texas Tech

The Kansas State women’s basketball team will close out its two-game five-day road trip on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas, as K-State faces Texas Tech at the United Spirit Arena.basketball clip art two

The Wildcats will be trying to snap a 10-game road losing streak and end a four-game skid in Big 12 play.

Kansas State ( 6-9, 0-4  Big 12 ) are coming off a 61-50 loss at Oklahoma on Saturday.

Texas Tech ( 6-9, 0-4 Big 12 ) enters Tuesday night’s game on a five-game losing streak following a 67-46 loss at Kansas on Saturday night.

Mangino to Iowa State

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State offensive coordinator Mark Mangino has signed a two-year contract worth $725,000.football clip art

Mangino’s deal, which he signed last week after being hired by the Cyclones, will pay him $350,000 for the 2014 season and $375,000 in 2015.

Mangino was the head coach at Kansas from 2002-09. He reached a $3 million settlement with the Jayhawks following allegations of player mistreatment. Mangino spent three years away from football before joining FCS school Youngstown State as an assistant in 2013.

 

Busy Blue Jay Wrestling Weekend

The Junction City Blue Jay wrestling team swept Rossville and Wellington in a double dual Friday night in Rossville.blue jay logo

Junction City defeated Rossville 39-30 and Wellington 34-29.

Going 2-0 for the Blue Jays were:

The Blue Jays also competed in the Salina South Tournament on Saturday.

Junction City finished third out of twelve teams.  Manhattan won the team championship with a score of 137 points, followed by Colby with 105, and Junction City with 103.5. Wichita West finished with 96 points, Norman, Oklahoma 81, Hutchinson 75, Salina Central 62, Salina South 44, Ottawa 28, Plainville 22, and Topeka High 21 points.

Andrew Millsap of Junction City, making his return from a broken leg suffered in November, finished first at 152 pounds for the Blue Jays. Devonte Wilson also finished first at 182 pounds.

Other Blue Jay highlights included second place finishes by Lake Deam at 138 pounds, Jake Bazaan 138, and Micah Felton at 171 pounds. Gabe Padilla finished fourth at 12o and Kayne Hutchinson fourth at 220 pounds.

 

Kansas ends K-State Win Streak

Kansas State’s ten game win streak came to an end Saturday in the 278th Sunflower Showdown at Kansas losing 86-60.

The Wildcats shot 44 percent from the field compared to 56 percent by the Jayhawks. K-State struggled from three point range ksumaking only 1-11. The Wildcats only had two players scoring in double figures, Nino Williams who had 12 and Thomas Gipson who had 10.

KU was led by their freshman Andrew Wiggins with 22 points and Wayne Selden Jr. with 20 points.

K-State matched KU in the first ten minutes but then the Jayhawks went on back to back 9-2 runs to break away and never looked back.

The Wildcats will return home Tuesday night to take on the Oklahoma Sooners at Bramlage Coliseum. The Jayhawks only have a day break before going to Iowa State to take on the Cyclones on Monday.

A Blue Jay – Lady Jay Split

On a night when Highland Park High School renamed their main basketball gym and court for longtime boys basketball coach Ken Darting his team turned in a solid performance in a 62-39 victory over the Junction City Blue Jays.

With Highland Park’s Jahmal McMurray pouring in four three point shots and scoring a total of 24 points, the undefeated and number one ranked team in 5A overpowered Junction City. McMurray’s teammate Shaffee Carr added 16 points, while Jordan Lawrence led the Blue Jays with 12 points.

Highland Park led 19-12 after one quarter and then outscored the Blue Jays 13-4 in the second period to open up a 16 point halftime advantage, and never trailed in the second half. The Scots are now 6-0 overall, and 2-0 in the Centennial League. The Blue Jays are 3-3, and 1-1.

Ken Darting is retiring after this season. In 13 years at Highland Park he has led the Scots to four state championships, and three runnerup finishes in the state tournament. The court was scheduled to be named after Darting, but during a pregame ceremony Friday evening there was a surprise announcement….that the gym would also be named in his honor.

Junction City will host Topeka High on Tuesday and Manhattan next Friday.

In the girls game Junction City defeated Highland Park 38-31, in a contest that was a struggle. Both teams struggled offensively but the Lady Jays pulled away in the closing minutes to get the win.  Kealee Rains led the Lady Jays with 10 points.

Junction City led early 9-0, but Highland Park rallied to lead by three late in the second quarter, and by one at halftime, 18-17. The game was tied early in the fourth quarter.

Junction City is 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Centennial League, while Highland Park fell to 1-5 and 0-2.

Junction City hosts Topeka High on Tuesday and Manhattan on Friday.

Tournament Bracket Out for Blue Jays

Junction City will be one of eight teams competing in the tournament Jan. 23, 24, and 25 at Valley Center High School.

The Blue Jays are the third seed in the Tournament. They will meet six seed Olathe Northwest in a first round game Thursday Jan. 23 at 3:15 p.m. On the same side of the bracket the second seed Blue Valley Northwest will play Topeka Seaman at 5 p.m. that same day. The other half of the bracket pits top seeded Wichita Southeast against Kansas City Turner, and Garden City against Valley Center.

Semifinal round games will be played on the 24th.

Final round games and the championship contest will be played on the 25th, with the championship game beginning at 7:15 p.m.
