Heat Relief Stations Available at Bill Snyder Family Stadium

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With high temperatures expected around 90 for Saturday’s season-opening football game against Stephen F. Austin, K-State Athletics is supplementing its First Aid west stadium centercenters at Bill Snyder Family Stadium with heat stations providing cool towels for those who may be affected by the warm weather.
Towels will be provided at tents located on the stadium’s south concourse near Gate M on the east and Gate D on the west; between Gates T-V on the east and near the elevators on the View Level (east upper-deck). Members of the Kansas Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross will provide support for the heat stations as well as the First Aid centers located on the east concourse inside Gate M and on the west concourse near Gate A.

In addition, fans are reminded they are permitted to bring into the stadium one, 1-liter bottle of commercial-brand water that has not been opened and is not frozen. Fans may refill their bottles at water fountains located behind Sections 2 and 8 on the west side and 23 and 25 on the east side.

Super Store Entrance Policy Changed

Entry procedures into the K-State Super Store locations on the east and west sides of the stadium are changing.  As always, the stores will open from outside the stadium when the parking lots open five hours before kickoff. However, once the stadium gates open two hours prior to kickoff, the Super Stores will close their outside doors and be open only from the stadium concourse. This will improve security, create a better flow in-and-out of the stores and relieve fans from being required to have their ticket scanned upon entering or exiting the stores.

Other Stadium Notes/Parking

Text-Assist: Fans needing any type of assistance are always encouraged to find stadium staff. In addition, K-State Athletics offers a text-assist service by which fans can report an incident or request help by texting CATFAN followed by their seat location and issue to the number 69050. The message goes directly to a K-State stadium dispatcher, who then communicates with stadium staff in the area to resolve the issue.

Tailgate Terraces: This season, the West Stadium Center’s Goss Family Terraces will open two hours prior to kickoff at the same time as all stadium gates. This has changed from last year when the terraces opened four hours before kickoff. A Tailgate Terrace ticket is required for entrance.

Parking

Parking lots open at 1 p.m., Saturday, five hours prior to kickoff.  Parking in the east and west lots of the stadium is reserved for members of the Ahearn Fund and requires a pass for entry.  Paid parking for fans with disabilities is available on a first-come, first-served basis in the east and west stadium lots. To gain entry, guests must display a state-issued accessible license plate or hangtag and present a disability card along with a form of personal identification.  All other general public parking is limited to grass parking in Lot 9 east of the stadium, in the paved lot of the Peters Recreation Center or in private satellite lots and parking areas on campus.  Additional public parking is available near the Equine Center north and east of the fire station on Denison Avenue and north of the sheep grazing lot on Denison.  General public parking fees are $20 for cars.

Chiefs’ Bus in Accident

jc postGRAND CHUTE, Wis. (AP) – Authorities say a bus taking the Kansas City Chiefs to their Wisconsin hotel was involved in an accident.

The Outagamie (awt-ah-GAY’-mee) County sheriff’s office says it was escorting the Chiefs’ five buses from the airport to the hotel Wednesday afternoon when a vehicle entered the intersection and collided with one of the buses.

Two adults and three children were in the vehicle that struck the bus. One of the children had a minor cut to the head and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

No one on the Chiefs’ bus was hurt.

The Chiefs face Green Bay on Thursday night in a preseason game.

K-State Runningbacks

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – The three running backs who returned for No. 20 Kansas State this k-state footballseason had run for fewer than 50 yards, so to say the competition was wide open this offseason would be an understatement.

When things shook out, Charles Jones had risen to the head of the depth chart.

Jones wound up beating Jarvis Leverett Jr. and DeMarcus Robinson for the starting nod, and incoming freshman Dalvin Warmack was unable to break through during fall camp.

Snyder said this week that the competition isn’t over, though. Much could change between the Wildcats’ season opener Saturday against Stephen F. Austin and next week’s game at Iowa State.

Royals Moves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals optioned reliever Aaron Crow to Double-A Northwest kcr twoArkansas to open up a roster spot for right-hander Liam Hendriks to make a spot start Wednesday night against Minnesota.

Hendriks was called up from Triple-A Omaha to start in place of Yordano Ventura, whose turn was skipped in the rotation so that he can rest his sore lower back.

Crow is headed to Northwest Arkansas because Omaha is chasing a playoff spot in the Pacific Coast League. The plan is for the former All-Star to make a couple of appearances to stay sharp before returning to the Royals next week, when rosters are allowed to expand.

Crow is 6-1 with a 3.86 ERA, though he has struggled the last few weeks.

Yost Implores Fans to Attend Games

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Royals manager Ned Yost pleaded with fans on Wednesday to show up kcrfor their remaining home games, one night after Alex Gordon’s walk-off homer gave Kansas City a dramatic win over Minnesota that was seen by just 13,847 at Kauffman Stadium.

Yost briefly mentioned the attendance in his postgame remarks, and expanded on his thoughts when he was asked a follow-up question about so many empty seats during a pennant race.

“We’ve been working hard to try to make our fans happy and make our fans proud of us for a lot of years,” Yost said, “and we’d like them to enjoy a night like that.”

The Royals entered Wednesday with a 1 1/2-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central.

Questions Surround the Kansas State Football Team

Going into this season there are questions on both sides of the ball for Kansas State.

Starting with the offense, eyes are on the running back position. Kansas SNYDER 8-26State lost both the starting running back last year in John Hubert, and back up running back Robert Rose to graduation.

This year their are three guys fighting for the starting possition and on the two deep depth chart released Tuesday sophomore Charles Jones was listed as the number one over senior DeMarcus Robinson.

Snyder was quick to say that nothing has been set in stone at this point.

“Whether or not that holds true, remains to be seen. It’s not written in stone right now. It’s still competitive, and will remain competitive throughout a good portion of the week, probably today and tomorrow,” says Snyder.

Jones commented Tuesday that he didn’t know that he was the number one and feels like he proved that he was a very versatile running back.

“It was a hard fight coming through camp. I still feel like me and DeMarcus will get a lot of carries and split time, and Jarvis (Leverett) will get some carries to. Even though they said I will start I still feel like we have a strong three running backs,” says Jones.

There was talk through camp that true freshman Dalvin Warmack may see some time as well at running back, but Snyder said Tuesday,”at this point in time he will probably red shirt.”

On the defensive side of the ball Kansas State recruited a number of high ranked Junior College transfers, however not all of them made it to summer workouts, and none of them made the depth chart for this years opener.

“Obviously if you come in after camp has started and you missed all of the summer workouts, and you missed all of the spring workouts, it’s not an easy task to get yourself on the depth chart where you would like to be,” said Snyder.

He did go on to say that there is a possibility that they may be able to crack the depth chart at some point.

“It’s a possibility, a good possibility I think. When that will take place, or how quickly that will take place, that’s up to them.”

Whether they will get on the field Saturday,”I would imagine some of them would get on the field, I can’t tell you how often or how much, and I can’t tell you for certain that they will, but the anticipation is that we would have the opportunity to put them on the field.”

Kansas State will open the season on Saturday against Stephen F. Austin at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Kick off is scheduled for 7:10 p.m..

Smith Unconfirmed About Contract

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith said Tuesday that he has not given any football clip artthought to breaking off negotiations on a long-term contract, though that remains a distinct possibility with the start of the regular season just a week away.

Smith said earlier in training camp that he wanted to end discussions of a new deal by the time the games count. That happens Sept. 7, when Kansas City opens its season against Tennessee.

Smith is in the final year of the three-year contract he signed with San Francisco, and is due to make $8 million this season. His agent has been speaking to the Chiefs for several months, but the two sides have not been close to an agreement.

Kansas State Anxious for Season Opener Saturday

The Kansas State Wildcats are coming off an 8-5 season capped off with a win over Michigan in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, but the season did not start off the way they would have liked.

Kansas State dropped their season opener at home against North Dakota SNYDER 8-26State 24-21. Coach Bill Snyder was asked if he has brought that up with this years team Tuesday during his first weekly press conference.

“I certainly have made the point on numerous occasions, but it’s not anything that I’m going to dwell on,” Snyder explained. “Part of taking things for granted, so to speak, part of it is just is not always the opponent. Sometimes its just your own personal performance level, and that’s always a concern.”

Snyder did go on to say that he has been reassured by the players that they are not taking this years season opener against Stephen F. Austin Saturday for granted.

“They feel like they have not taken this opening ball game or their performance level or anything else for granted. That’s the feeling of our players right now.”

JAKE WATERS 8-26This year Jake Waters is entering his Senior campaign at Kansas State as the undoubted starting quarterback, compared to last year as a junior college transfer fighting for the starting position against sophomore Daniel Sams.

Waters explained that it will be vital this year to start out on the right foot.

“Last year we started off on that wrong foot and we kind of tumbled, stumbled a little bit for a while but then we finally got going. We want to start fast, first drive, first play, we want to get everything rolling. That will kind of help us with the season,” says Waters.

The Wildcats will open the season at home on Saturday against Stephen F. Austin.

The game is scheduled for a 6:10 p.m. kick off. You can catch that game on KJCK 1420 AM starting at 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

Yankees Roll Past Royals

kcr twoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Derek Jeter drove in two runs in his final scheduled trip to Kauffman Stadium, backing a sharp outing from Michael Pineda and helping the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1 on Monday night for their fifth straight win.

Jacoby Ellsbury drove in a run in the seventh inning with the 1,000th hit of his career, then added a two-run homer in the ninth. Stephen Drew and Martin Prado also homered for New York.

Pineda (3-2) gave up a solo shot to Mike Moustakas leading off the third inning, but that was about it in his third game back from the disabled list. Pineda struck out five without a walk in 6 1-3 innings to win for the first time since beating the Cubs on April 16.

James Shields (12-7) allowed six runs over 6 2-3 innings for Kansas City.
