MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State volleyball freshman Kylee Zumach became the first wildcatWildcat in school history to earn four Big 12 player of the week awards in a season on Monday as she was named the conference’s Rookie of the Week for the period ending October 5.
Zumach, who garnered the Big 12’s top rookie honor for three straight weeks from September 8-22, led all conference freshmen in kills, kills per set, and points per set last week to help K-State earn a pair of road wins. The outside hitter had a team-best 18 kills in K-State’s five-set, come-from-behind win at KU on October 1 while she once again led the team in kills at Texas Tech on October 4, helping the Wildcats sweep the Red Raiders with 15 kills and a .300 hitting percentage.
In eight combined sets over the two matches, Zumach totaled 33 kills, four blocks and two digs to lead the Wildcats to their first wins in both Lawrence and Lubbock since 2011.
Zumach enters this week among the Big 12’s leaders in kills (3.67) and points per set (4.04) for overall matches, checking in at number three in both categories. In conference-only matches, the Buffalo, Minnesota native is averaging 3.92 kills per set, which is the sixth-highest mark in the Big 12. Her 4.27 points per set in Big 12 matches are also sixth best.
With her 18 kills last week at KU, Zumach became the fastest Wildcat freshman to record 200 kills in a season sinceCari Jensen also took 16 matches to cross the threshold in 2000. Zumach leads the Wildcats with 231 total kills on the year.
Zumach’s four Big 12 weekly awards pass the previous most for a season of three earned by Kaitlynn Pelger in 2013. The quartet of weekly awards for Zumach are already the second-most by a Wildcat for an entire career, trailing Pelger’s eight from 2010-2013.

TCU, Baylor Turn Big 12 Upside Down

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Texas-Oklahoma game is typically a bellwether matchup for the Big BIG 12 LOGO12 title race.

It’s not even the biggest game in Texas this weekend.

That distinction belongs to a matchup between No. 9 TCU (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) and fifth-ranked Baylor (5-0, 2-0), the league’s last two unbeaten teams.

But that’s just the way things are these days in the upside-down Big 12.

Fake Punt Helps 49ers beat Chiefs 22-17

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – Colin Kaepernick threw for 201 yards and a chiefs logotouchdown, Frank Gore ran for 107 yards and the San Francisco 49ers converted a fake punt to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 22-17 on Sunday.

The 49ers (3-2) turned to a trick play on fourth-and-1 from their own 29 early in the fourth quarter, giving a direct snap to Craig Dahl for a 3-yard run up the middle. Kaepernick directed the offense down field, and Phil Dawson kicked a 27-yard field goal with 8:42 to play for the go-ahead score.

Dawson also connected from 55, 52, 35 and 30 yards.

The 49ers held off former franchise quarterback Alex Smith and the Chiefs (2-3) twice in the closing moments. Smith threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns, but Perrish Cox intercepted his overthrown pass to end any chance Kansas City had to rally.

Kansas State Improves to 4-1 with 45-13 Victory over Texas Tech

The Kansas State Wildcats kept the momentum alive Saturday night taking down Texas Tech 45-13 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

The Wildcats continue to show good things on both sides of the ball as the defense picked off Texas Tech’s Davis Webb four times KSU TECH ONEand K-States offense had over 500 yards of total offense.

Head Coach Bill Snyder explained after the game that he felt the defense did an exceptional job, except for two drives.

“The two long drives that they had, and got some extended plays. It’s not so much that they scored as much as it was that we just made some nonsensical mistakes, errors that allowed it to happen. Those are the things that we talk about were we just have to make some improvement, and in a couple of areas we did,” said Snyder.

Morgan Burns and Travis Green both had two interceptions a piece in the ball game. The defense held Texas Tech to 347 yards total offense, and the Red Raiders had been averaging about that much passing in their first four games.

Offensively the Wildcats made some big plays including a one handed touchdown catch by Curry Sexton in the end zone with 11:10 to play in the 4th quarter. After the game Sexton said,”I guess it’s better to be lucky than good, I don’t know. I stuck my hand out and it stuck, I don’t know. I didn’t expect to catch it I’ll tell you that much.”KSU TECH TWO

Coach Snyder also commented on the catch saying that it should make the Sports Center top 10 plays of the day,”that better make it.”

Sexton finished the game with 128 yards receiving and two touchdowns, his second game this season with over 100 yards receiving. Tyler Lockett also finished with two receiving touchdowns and had a total of 125 yards receiving on the night.

K-State’s rushing game however wasn’t as consistent as Snyder would have liked. “We didn’t have the consistency there, and we had to throw the ball, that allowed us to keep drives alive. You would like to be able to do it with the running game and create a little bit more balance, but were not quite there yet obviously.”

The Wildcats finished with 245 yards rushing and were led by Jake Waters who ran for 105 yards on 17 carries.

Kansas State will have next week off giving them two weeks to prepare for the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, October 18th.
