Manhattan 16 Junction City 7

The Manhattan Indians used a powerful offensive line and strong running game to overpower the Junction City Blue Jays 16-7 Friday night at Al Simpler Stadium.fff

The Indians put together a drive of more than nine minutes and 17 plays in the second quarter to take the lead on a one yard scoring run by quarterback Erik Prockish. Junction City went ahead 7-6 in the third quarter after Tanner Lueker hooked up with Jovan Baldwin on a 74-yard scoring pass play and kicked the extra point.

But Manhattan countered on their next series with a field goal by Joe Trujillo to go back on top 9-7. The Indians capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter with another score.

Manhattan coach Joe Schartz felt his team’s offensive and defensive lines controlled the game. “We weren’t quite sure coming in because typically Junction City has a big powerful offensive line and we didn’t know if we could control them or not.”

Junction City coach Randall Zimmerman said the strength of their Manhattan team is the offensive line. “Chris Martin ( running back ) really carried the load tonight. The quarterback does a great job of getting the ball where he needed to get it.” Zimmerman noted the Blue Jay offense had a tough night.

Junction City fell to 4-2 with the loss, while Manhattan improved to 6-0. The Indians claimed the Sportsman Trophy ( Silver Football ) with the win. That trophy goes to the winner of the annual game between Junction City and Manhattan.

Royals Stand Pat with Roster

BALTIMORE (AP) – The Kansas City Royals will enter the AL Championship Series with the same 25-man roster they used in a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels.kcr two

Manager Ned Yost has an 11-man pitching staff, six outfielders, five infielders, designated hitter Billy Butler and catchers Salvador Perez and Erik Kratz.

Baltimore’s roster, as expected, does not include suspended first baseman Chris Davis.

The Orioles have an 11-man pitching staff that includes left-handed reliever Brian Matusz. He replaced Ubaldo Jimenez, who was part of Baltimore’s roster for the ALDS.

That was the only change in manager Buck Showalter’s roster.

Game 1 is scheduled for Friday night, weather permitting.

Blue Jays – Indians Play Friday Night

The battle for the Sportsmans Trophy, also called the Silver Football, is Friday night at Al Simpler blue jay logoStadium in Junction City.

Manhattan, 5-0, meets Junction City 4-1 in their 2014 matchup.

The trophy which dates its history back to the late 1940s, is presented annually to the winner of this annual ballgame.

indiansManhattan coach Joe Schartz said it’s different this year. “Being week six, the game before districts, there’s still quite a bit on the line.” In recent years the Junction City – Manhattan has always been played on week nine, the last week of the regular season. But due to a change in district assignments in which Junction City was moved into a district with three Wichita teams, the game was moved ahead three weeks.

Junction City coach Randall Zimmerman is well aware that this is a big game. “It’s a big game, a big game for the alumni, the community. We have to sell it to our kids a little bit because we have a lot of kids that don’t grow up in this community. But I think they understand the magnitude of this game.”

Junction City has won the last two meetings with Manhattan 34-33 in 2012 and 16-10 in 2013.

Manhattan’s Chris Martin is a very capable running back. But he does more. Schartz noted Martin is one guy who stands out on the video when other coaches look at it. “He does a lot for us. He plays offense, quarterback and running back. He plays corner and safety, and he’s also our punter so he does a lot of different things for us.

The Blue Jays have a balanced rushing attack with Downey Wood and Jovan Baldwin leading  the way, and featuring Tanner Lueker at quarterback.

In recent seasons many of the outcomes in the Junction City – Manhattan games have not been determined until late in the fourth quarter.

Kickoff Friday night is scheduled at 7:08 p.m.   It will be Tribute to the Troops night at Al Simpler Stadium.

Royals Vying for AL Pennant for First time in 29 Years

The Kansas City Royals will open up the American League Championship Series Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Royals began preparing for post-season play prior to even knowing kcr twothat they would make it to the post-season.

“I believe that you have to manage with a different sense of urgency in the post-season, and we started doing it I think about two and a half weeks out,” says Ned Yost, Royals Manager. “We wanted to try and get in post-season mode about two and a half weeks out before we got into the post-season, so that our guys would be prepared for it.”

Kansas City snapped there 29 year post-season drought on September 30th in a 9-8 win over the Oakland Athletics in 13 innings. They would then go on to sweep the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the American League Division Series in three games.

James Shields will get the start Friday night when the Royals open the ALCS against the Orioles. Shields went 27-17 with a 3.17 ERA in 68 regular-season starts for Kansas City. He is 2-0 in the post-season picking up the win against the Athletics in the wildcard game and game three against the Angels.

Sheilds credited the Royals defense,”these guys put on probably one of the best displays of defense in one series I’ve ever seen, against the Angels. You know as a pitcher that’s your best friend, is defense. You have to trust your defense and I think we have one of the best in the league. Obviously the Orioles have a great defense as well, and it’s going to be a good matchup.”

The Royals and Orioles will face off Friday night night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in a 7:00 p.m. first pitch.

Orioles Won’t Carry Suspended Davis on ALCS Roster

BALTIMORE (AP) – Suspended slugger Chris Davis won’t be playing in the AL kcr twoChampionship Series for the Baltimore Orioles.

Manager Buck Showalter said Thursday that Davis will be omitted from the 25-man roster, which must be submitted on Friday morning before the Orioles host the Kansas City Royals in Game 1.

Davis was suspended for 25 games by Major League Baseball on Sept. 12 for testing positive for amphetamines associated with the drug Adderall.

His suspension included the final 17 games of the regular season and Baltimore’s three-game sweep of Detroit in the AL Division Series, meaning the first baseman has five games left to serve.

Ty Zimmerman to Watch the Blue Jays

Former Blue Jay and Kansas State standout Ty Zimmerman is back in Junction City this week visiting family, and to watch the Junction City football team play Manhattan Friday night at Al Simpler Stadium.

Ty Zimmerman watched the Blue Jays practice on Wednesday.
Ty Zimmerman watched the Blue Jays practice on Wednesday.

Ty is currently a member of the New Orleans Saints organization, on their injured reserve list, while he recovers from shoulder surgery for an injury suffered in a preseason game in August.

After watching the Blue Jay practice on Wednesday he remembered back to his playing days in a Junction City uniform….his senior year. “It was up for league, district championship, silver trophy, and we were going for a perfect 9-0 record. So many emotions were into that game, and we ended up coming out and hitting on all cylinders and putting a good game together….something I’ll never forget.”

Junction City won that ballgame in 2008 by the score of 30-6  enroute to a perfect 13-0 season and the Class 6A state championship.

This annual matchup is always a big game for both programs….the Blue Jays and the Indians. This year’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday.  Manhattan will enter undefeated at 5-0, while the Blue Jays are 4-1.
