K-State’s Snyder voted into college Hall of Fame

snyderDAVE SKRETTA, AP Sports Writer

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Bill Snyder has been voted into the College Football Hall of Fame, a person familiar with the results told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the results will be formally announced Friday in Dallas. Snyder became eligible as an active coach when he turned 75 in October.

Snyder took over one of the worst programs in the history of major college football in 1989 and turned it into a national contender. He briefly retired in 2005, but returned three seasons later after the program had fallen on hard times.

Snyder is 187-94-1 at Kansas State, easily the winningest coach in school history. He’s led the Wildcats to two Big 12 titles and 16 bowl games, including this year’s Alamo Bowl.

Recruiting Announcement Mixup

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Ohio power forward Carlton Bragg, one of the nation’s top basketball jayhawkprospects, is headed to Kansas – much to the chagrin of those in Kentucky.

During a news conference at his high school Thursday, Bragg ended his recruitment by pulling out a KU cap. But when he did, he declared that he was committing to “the University of Kentucky.”

KU? UK? The two blue bloods could be easily confused.

Bragg quickly corrected himself, and a minute later came back to the podium and declared for the assembled television cameras that he was headed to “the University of Kansas.”

A 6-foot-9 power forward, Bragg chose the Jayhawks over the Wildcats and Illinois. He’s the 14th-ranked player in the 2015 recruiting class, according to Rivals.com.

Former JCHS Basketball Coach Carl Taylor Passes Away

postFormer Junction City High School boys basketball coach Carl Taylor has died.  Taylor had been battling complications from diabetes.

He guided the Blue Jay basketball program in the late 1980’s and early 90’s, taking one team to the Class 6A State Tournament.  In addition to serving as a teacher at the senior high school, Taylor also coached the Lady Jay softball team for a portion of his time at JCHS.

Former Blue Jay basketball player and current JCHS Athletic Director Matt Westerhaus remembered his coach, noting Taylor will be missed. “High expectations, demanded a lot out of his players. You knew where you stood with Coach Taylor, and once you got past that you realized that he was a big teddy bear inside and cared for everybody in the program. So he’s going to be missed.”

After leaving Junction City Taylor later coached for many years at Wichita Southeast High School where he guided the Golden Buffaloes to three state titles, and a series of other high finishes in the Class 6A State Basketball Tournaments.

Chiefs SIgn QB Terrelle Pryor

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have signed Terrelle Pryor to a one-year deal to provide chiefs logocompetition at the backup quarterback spot, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday night because the Chiefs had not announced the deal. Pryor worked out for the team earlier in the day, and later tweeted a picture of himself carrying a notebook with the Chiefs’ logo on it.

The signing could mean the end of backup Chase Daniel’s run in Kansas City. The Chiefs are tight against the salary cap, and parting with Daniel could save nearly $4 million.

The Chiefs also have developmental quarterbacks Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray on the roster.

Wildcats Snap Three-Game Losing Streak

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Marcus Foster scored 23 points off the bench and Kansas State took wildcat twoadvantage of some cold shooting by TCU for a 58-53 victory Wednesday night that snapped a three-game losing streak.

Kansas State led most of the way, but TCU was still within 48-44 with 1:14 left when Nino Williams was fouled near midcourt. The senior forward was hurt on the play, and Foster was picked to shoot the free throws, calmly draining both to extend the Wildcats’ lead.

Kyan Anderson missed a jumper at the other end, and the ball wound up in the hands of Foster, who had been benched the past two games. He made two more foul shots to put the game away.

Williams finished with eight points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats (8-7, 1-1 Big 12), who appeared to have put a horrendous nonconference season behind them. Their seven wins before the start of league play was their fewest since 2001-02.

Trey Zeigler had 19 points to lead the Horned Frogs, who started 13-0 but have dropped their first two Big 12 games. Anderson, their top scorer, had eight points on 2-for-7 shooting.

Wichita State Routs Bradley

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Darius Carter scored a game-high 19 points and No. 15 Wichita State beat shockersBradley 63-43 on Wednesday night.

The Shockers defeated the Braves after trailing at halftime for just the second time this season.

Wichita State (13-2, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference) has won 25 consecutive games at home and 21 in a row in the MVC. The Shockers also have won 10 in a row against Bradley, including the past six at home.

Ron Baker scored 12 and Shaquille Morris added 10 points Wichita State.

Ka’Darryl Bell led the Braves (6-10, 1-2) with 11 points. Tramique Sutherland and Auston Barnes each added 10.

Kansas Edges Baylor

WACO, Texas (AP) – Wayne Selden made three consecutive baskets when No. 12 Kansas needed themjayhawk most, and the Jayhawks held on for a 56-55 victory over No. 21 Baylor on Wednesday night to win their 24th consecutive conference opener.

Selden was 1-for-6 shooting before scoring seven points in a row, including a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 2:17 left that put the Jayhawks (12-2, 1-0 Big 12) ahead to stay.

A jumper by Selden with 2:59 left tied the game, and he added a layup with 1:19 to go.

Jamari Traylor had 13 points for Kansas before fouling out with more than five minutes left. Brannen Greene scored 12, including two free throws with 6.3 seconds remaining.

Kenny Chery led Baylor (11-3, 0-2) with 25 points.

Kansas hasn’t lost a conference opener since January 1991, when the Jayhawks were still in the Big Eight.

Baylor Rolls Past Kansas State in Women’s Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Nina Davis scored 24 points and Kristy Wallace added 17 to help No. 5 wildcat twoBaylor rout Kansas State 74-44 on Tuesday night for the Lady Bears 18th straight win in the series.

Baylor (13-1, 2-0 Big 12) last lost to the Wildcats on Jan. 27, 2004.

Breanna Lewis led the Wildcats (10-3, 0-2) with 13 points while Haley Texada added 12.

Kansas State led 3-0 before Baylor scored the next 23-0 points to take control of the game. A basket from Lewis ended the Bears’ scoring spurt with 6:22 left before the break, giving Kansas State its first basket since the game-opening 3-pointer.

The Wildcats closed the gap to 28-14 on Texada’s 3-pointer with 3:46 left in the first half, but it’s as close as first-year Jeff Mittie’s team would come.
