Wichita State Wins Big

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Ron Baker scored 15 points and No. 14 Wichita State breezed past Drake 74-40 shockerson Sunday for its 26th straight win in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Tekele Cotton added 10 points for the Shockers (18-2, 8-0). No one played more than 28 minutes for Wichita State.

Reed Timmer topped Drake (4-16, 1-7) with eight points.

Blue Jays Finish Seventh in Tournament of Champions

After trailing by seven points early, the Junction City Blue Jays rallied to take the lead in the second toc onequarter, and never trailed again enroute to a 56-42 win over Wichita North in the seventh place consolation game of the Tournament of Champions in Dodge City.

The Blue Jays got 13 points from Raye Wilson, 11 from Josh Bryan, and 10 apiece from Cody Magree and Ricardo Erans.

Junction City, ( 4-9 overall ), went 1-2 in the eight team tournament which was played at the United Wireless Arena in Dodge City. The Blue Jays fell in the first round to Central Plains, and to Bishop Carroll in the consolation semifinals.

Pat Battle, Junction City coach, noted his team shot horrible on Saturday, but did a good job defensively against a team with a lot of good speed. Battle said the Blue Jays did good job in the second half, adjusted their press, and that bothered Wichita North.

Battle said the Tournament of Champions is “a great tournament. ” He was glad the Blue Jays made the trip. “They treat you great. It’s a great venue, good teams, people are very friendly down here, and yeah, it was a great experience for us from the standpoint of a midseason tournament.”

Derby captured the tournament title with a 50-37 win over Central Plains in the championship game. For Central Plains, a Class 2A team, it was their fourth straight game against a Class 6A team. They had defeated Dodge City before the tournament, and then Junction City and Shawnee Mission South in the tournament before finally losing to Derby.

This is the first time Junction City has competed in the Tournament of Champions, which is 72 years old, and billed as the oldest high school basketball tournament west of the Mississippi River.

Classic on Thursday evening. Tipoff is scheduled at 7:30 p.m at Topeka High, the site of the tournament.

The other first-round matchups include Sumner Academy against Shawnee Mission South on the same side of the tournament bracket as Junction City. The other side of the bracket has Wichita South meeting Blue Valley West and Goddard Eisenhower playing Shawnee Mission East.

The Lady Jays are the sixth seed in the tournament, which continues on Friday and Saturday.

Balanced Effort Carries K-State Past Oklahoma State

Senior Nino Williams post his second straight 20-point game to lead Kansas State in a 63-53 win over wildcat twoOklahoma State at Bramlage Coliseum Saturday.

K-State ( 12-8, 5-2 Big 12 ) held the lead for all but 14 seconds of the game, as the Wildcats connected on 57.1 percent ( 24-42 ) from the field, including 75 percent ( 12-16 ) in the second half. It was the highest shooting percentage in a Big 12 game since the squad shot 57.4 percent ( 27-47 ) at Iowa State on Jan. 7, 2006.

The Wildcats were also impressive on defense, holding the Cowboys to their second-lowest point total.

K-State coach Bruce Weber stated that he thought it was a good team win. “I thought Jevon ( Thomas ) set the tone of the game with great energy. Our defense got a couple of turnovers to start to get up 6-0, then 10-4 and pretty much maintain the whole game. I thought our defense was great. We held them at 49 ( points ) until those couple of free throws by ( Phil ) Forte,

The Wildcats host No. 18 / 17 West Virginia ( 16-3, 4-2 big 12 ) at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

Baylor Rolls Past Kansas State in Women’s Basketball

WACO, Texas (AP) – Alexis Prince prefers taking shots over questions for No. 3 Baylor. BIG 12 LOGO

That shyness Prince exhibits when talking to reporters after the game is radically different from her approach on the court during it.

Prince scored 18 points and was big in two key runs to help the Lady Bears win their 17th consecutive game, 68-46 over Kansas State on Saturday.

“She’s not going to turn down a shot,” coach Kim Mulkey said. “And we don’t want her to.”

Baylor (18-1, 7-0 Big 12) went ahead to stay with a 15-1 run over a nearly 6 1/2-minute span in the first half when the Wildcats missed eight consecutive shots after Brianna Craig’s 3-pointer gave them their only lead at 6-5.

Lady Jays Fall to Shawnee Heights 63-19

Junction City was unable to get the shots to fall Friday night on the road at Shawnee Heights falling 63-19.

Overall the Lady Jays did present a strong defensive effort that pleased head coach Blue Jay Logo (1)Nate Parks.

“Defensively we did some really great things. The thing that was unfortunate was that we weren’t able to put some shots in early to give us some confidence on offense,” said Parks.

Shawnee Heights was led once again by Jazz Sweet who maintained a strong presence at the post for the Lady Thunderbirds finishing with 16 points.

The Lady Jays will now prepare for the 2015 Capital City Classic at Topeka High. Junction City will play Topeka High Thursday night in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
