Moore Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

wildcat two
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After hitting a team-best .538 and driving in eight runs during K-State’s sweep of Santa Clara,Tyler Moore was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for the period ending March 8, the conference office announced.
A junior transfer from Coffeyville (KS) Community College, Moore raised his season batting average from .227 to .343 with a week that saw him tally back-to-back multi-hit games over the final two contests to give him seven hits in three games, drive in a career-high five runs on March 7 to help make up his eight RBIs, and fuel a K-State offense that hit .343 and outscored the Broncos, 31-9, in the series.
Moore began K-State’s home-opening series by registering a two-out, game-tying RBI single in the fourth inning in K-State’s eventual 4-1 win on Friday. The RBI in game one preempted Moore’s showing on Saturday in which he drove in a game-high five runs, the most RBIs by a K-State catcher since May 4, 2005 (David Baker, 6, vs. Washburn), and hit his second home run of the season, a leadoff blast in the sixth inning. In the series finale on Sunday, Moore tied for the team-lead in hits with a personal-best four in the Wildcats’ 10-3 win. The four hits, which included three singles and a double, were also the most by a K-State backstop since March 25, 2007 (Rob Vaughn, 4, at Texas).
Defensively, Moore threw out three of Santa Clara’s four attempted base stealers, including two on Friday. The Mill Valley High School product is 5-for-9 (56%) in caught stealing attempts this season to go with his team-leading 13 RBIs.
For the week, Moore finished among the Big 12’s top-10 in six offensive categories, including RBIs (T-2nd), batting average (4th), OBP (5th), hits (T-6th), total bases (7th) and slugging percentage (8th).
Moore is the first Wildcat this season to receive a weekly award from the Big 12. In 2014, four Wildcats garnered a total of five conference weekly honors.
K-State (7-7) continues its eight-game homestand with a two-game set against Creighton (5-5) from March 10-11. First pitch in game one on Tuesday is set for 6:30 p.m. at Tointon Family Stadium.

Chiefs Sign Veteran Safety Tyvon Branch

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs have signed veteran safety Tyvon Branch to a one-year deal, chiefs logohelping to solidify a position that could be thinned out considerably by free agency.

Kansas City is already poised to play without Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry, who is undergoing treatment for lymphoma. Fellow safeties Kurt Coleman and Ron Parker are free agents.

The 28-year-old Branch has been solid when he’s healthy, but injuries have kept him from appearing in just five games over the past two seasons. He’s spent his entire seven-year career with AFC West rival Oakland, making 461 tackles, eight sacks and four interceptions.

The Chiefs already have been busy in free agency, restructuring deals with linebacker Tamba Hali and defensive tackle Mike DeVito, and agreeing to terms with wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.
