Royals Fall to the Twins

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mike Pelfrey pitched seven scoreless innings to pick up his first victory since 2013 as the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 Wednesday night.

Joe Mauer reached base four times with two hits and two walks and scored a run.kcr two

Pelfrey’s last victory was Sept. 23, 2013, against Detroit. He went 0-3 in five starts last year before undergoing season-ending elbow surgery on June 10.

Pelfrey (1-0) gave up five singles, walked two, hit two batters and struck out four. It was his longest outing since he went seven innings against Texas on Aug. 31, 2013.

Glen Perkins got the last three outs for his third save

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie (0-1) gave up all three runs and six hits with a career high-tying six walks in five innings.

The Twins scored all their runs in the first on three hits, two walks and a hit batter. Oswaldo Arcia was hit by Guthrie with the bases loaded to bring home Brian Dozier. Kennys Vargas and Dozier singled in the other two runs. Guthrie induced Kurt Suzuki to ground into a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning and prevent further damage.

The Twins loaded the bases in the second on Torii Hunter’s double and walks to Joe Mauer and Dozier. However, Hunter was out trying to steal home to end the inning.

Guthrie did not allow a run after the first, but he was never sharp, throwing only 50 percent strikes in 98 pitches.

Yohan Pino replaced Guthrie and threw three scoreless innings.

Despite Losing Five Players to Transfer or Dismissal K-State Head coach Remains Optimistic

K-State Head coach Bruce Weber was optimistic and in generally good spirits when he met with the media for the first time since his Wildcats finished it’s 15-17 season with a loss to TCU in the Big 12 Championship Tournament on March 11th.

Not even two weeks after the end of the season Weber announced the dismissal of Marcus Foster and Tre Harris, and the transfer of Javon WEBER TEXASThomas. Another two weeks went by and Nigel Johnson announced he would be transferring and just over a week after that announcement Weber announced the dismissal of Malek Harris. In all Kansas State has dismissed three players and seen three players transfer as Jack Karapetyan left the team during the season.

“This is not something that just happened,” Coach Weber said. “I’m just telling you, obviously there were suspensions during the year and we addressed them, so people were aware.”

Both Foster and Malek Harris were suspended for a three games this past February. Weber would not go into detail about why the two, and Tre Harris were dismissed from the team. All three were players recruited by Weber, who said that despite having to dismiss those players he doesn’t plan on changing his recruitment style.

“Obviously you try to do your due diligence as far as doing background checks and knowing something about the young men. But a lot of things can happen to change young men. It’s the disappointing part of the job and the hard part. It’s not the fun part. Tough love is really hard if your a parent, if you’re a teacher, if you’re a coach, if you’re a boss and you have to provide tough love and discipline, it’s not a fun thing and it’s a difficult thing.”

Kansas State returns just five scholarship players leaving plenty of room for a large recruiting class, which Weber is excited for,”we feel like we’ve got guys that are excited to be here.”

Weber is looking forward to a six man recruiting class made up of three star athletes including the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year Dean Wade of St John. He is still hoping to add one more player this off season.

“As I said we’re going to have to have a couple of guys without some experience step up, but it can happen and I feel good about the group that is coming in and they’re excited about coming here.”

Current sophomore Wesley Iwundu and junior Justin Edwards are expected to step up and be two of the top players on next year’s team. Iwundu averaged 5.8 points per game last season and ranked second on the team for assists. Edwards finished the season averaging 6.3 points per game and led the team in steals.

New JCHS Head Coaches Introduced

Junction City High School is turning to a pair of JCHS graduates to guide the future fortunes of Lady Jay volleyball and basketball.

( L-R ) Lady Jay Head Basketball Coach Derek Petty and Lady Jay Head Volleyball Coach G. G. Booth.
( L-R ) Lady Jay Head Basketball Coach Derek Petty and Lady Jay Head Volleyball Coach G. G. Booth.

On Wednesday Matt Westerhaus, Athletic Director, introduced G.G. Booth ( Gaskin ) as the new head coach in volleyball, and Derek Petty as the new leader of the Lady Jay basketball program. “G.G. a 98 graduate of Junction City High School, and Derek Petty a 1983 graduate of Junction City High School.”

Petty stated, “This is what I’ve been wanting since the moment I started coaching basketball…to come back to Junction City, my high school, and give back to my school and my community.”

Petty played football and basketball at JCHS in the early 1980’s.  He has spent the past seven years as the head boys basketball coach at Sierra Pacific High School in Hanford, California. He also served as an assistant boys basketball coach at Junction City High School under former Blue Jay coach Felix Grimmett.

“Coach Grimmett, he gave me my first shot to start coaching. I learned a lot from him. He was very well organized.  I believe we had one of the first I-70 League championship teams in school history.”

Petty will also serve as a Behavior Support Specialist for JCHS.

Booth is also a former player for JCHS, and in recent years has served as an assistant coach in multiple sports.  She is already well acquainted with the volleyball players.  She noted the incoming senior class is the first group of girls she has worked with since their freshman year. “They know my coaching style, they know my expectations, they’ve been involved with me in multiple different sports. The best part about it is, we’re excited.”

Booth noted six seniors are expected to return to the volleyball program next season. “That’s going to be a big thing in volleyball.”

Booth has been an assistant volleyball coach at JCHS for five years, and is currently the media specialist at Junction City High School.

Both coaches formally begin their duties August first.

Beatty Wrapping Up First Spring Practice as Kansas Coach

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – One thing that has become clear during David Beaty’s first spring in charge of the Kansas football program: He likes to get things done at lightning pace.jayhawk

He wants guys running between drills. He wants them moving quickly from one play to the next in practice. He wants them hustling in and out of the huddle at a sprint.

Perhaps it will all pay off with a quick turnaround.

The new-look Jayhawks are preparing for a public unveiling in their annual spring game on Saturday. Beaty, who had been the wide receivers coach at Texas A&M, know what it takes to win at Kansas. He was part of Mark Mangino’s staff during their most recent run at glory.

K-State Falls to Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The K-State baseball team surrendered seven extra-base hits among the 12 total safeties by Nebraska on Tuesday as the Wildcats fell for the third-straight game with a 10-4 loss at Hawks Field.unnamed (29)

The Wildcats (18-21) trailed early, allowing seven runs between the second and fourth innings, and were not able to plate their first run off the Huskers (30-13) until the sixth. The first three pitchers used by K-State surrendered the bulk of the 10 runs, with starter Levi MaVorhis taking the loss after allowing three runs on one hit and three walks in 1 1/3 innings. Mark Biesma, who allowed two of MaVorhis’ runners to score when he entered with the bases loaded in the second, surrendered two runs in one inning pitched while Jackson Douglas was responsible for two runs on three hits in two innings.

Nebraska, which had six extra-base hits among its first seven hits in the game, had a pair of run-producing doubles in the second, two solo home runs in the third and two more RBI doubles in the fourth.
