Yankees Rout Royals

NEW YORK (AP) – Brett Gardner, Brian McCann and Chase Headley homered during an eight-run first inning and the New York Yankees quickly erased the memory of a lost weekend, romping past the AL Central-leading Kansas City Royals 14-1 Monday.kcr four

Stephen Drew added another three-run homer off a favorite foil of the Yankees, Jeremy Guthrie (4-3), before the team made an out in the second.

Slade Heathcott hit his first major league homer in the seventh as New York, coming off a sweep by Texas, snapped a six-game skid. The Yankees won for just the second time in 12 games, beating the team that began the day with the best record in the majors.

Nathan Eovaldi (4-1) pitched with runners on in all but two of his seven-plus innings. Working on five days’ rest, he allowed eight hits and a run.

Date Set for Next St. Xavier Alumni Basketball Game

SAINT XAVIER SCHOOL

The next St. Xavier Alumni Basketball game has been scheduled for Saturday, December 22, 2018, at 7 p.m.

The initial Alumni Basketball Game at Saint Xavier this past December raised about $10,000 in the effort to keep the doors of that high school open.

The coordinator of the Basketball Game, Dan Zoeller made the announcement.

Cardinals Top Royals Sunday — Royals Win Two out of Three in Series

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Unbeaten Michael Wacha won for the seventh straight time this year and the St. Louis Cardinals ended their season-worst three-game losing streak by beating the Kansas City Royals 6-1 Sunday.kcr five

Wacha held the majors’ best-hitting team to one unearned run and five singles in seven innings. He exited with a 1.87 ERA and became the first Cardinals pitcher to start 7-0 since Matt Morris began 8-0 in 2005.

Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Yordano Ventura (3-4).

Kansas City took the first two games of the series Friday and Saturday at Kaufman Stadium.

Royals Shut Out Cardinals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kendrys Morales hit two home runs and had five RBIs, Chris Young gave up six hits in six innings and the Kansas City Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 Friday night.

The Royals improved to 27-14, the best record in the majors, while the Cardinals dropped to 27-15, best in the National League.

Morales, who leads the American League with 37 RBIs, hit a three-run homer with two out in the first. He homered again in the third with Lorenzo Cain aboard for his 13th multihomer game. The five RBIs matched a Royals’ season high.

Young (4-0) got 13 flyball outs and struck out two. In Young’s four starts, he has allowed one earned run in 22 1-3 innings (0.40 ERA).

Royals starters Young, Edinson Volquez, Yordano Ventura and Jeremy Guthrie have combined to throw 26 shutout innings while allowing 18 hits in the past four games.

Oklahoma Knocks Kansas State Out of Big 12 Baseball Tournament

TULSA, Okla. (AP) – Robert Tasin hit a go-ahead single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, and Oklahoma edged Kansas State 3-1 on Friday night in a pool play elimination game in the Big 12 Tournament.wildcat two

With the game tied at 1, Colbey Carpenter led off with a single off Kansas State starter Corey Fischer (4-6), who was then replaced by Lucas Benenanti. After Carpenter was bunted over to second, Benenanti got a strikeout before throwing a wild pitch that allowed Carpenter to move to third.

Tasin then hit a chopper that Wildcats shortstop Tyler Wolfe could not make a play on as Carpenter scored. Oklahoma (35-26) added an insurance run on another wild pitch by Benenanti.

Jacob Evans (6-1) tossed the final 1 2/3 innings for the win.

Kansas State (27-30) took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Tyler Moore.

Blue Jays to Play Shawnee Mission East at State Baseball

The Junction City Blue Jays ( 12-10 ), have drawn Shawnee Mission East ( 18-4 ) as their first round opponent in the Class 6A State Baseball Tournament Thursday, May 29 in Lawrence.

The game has been scheduled for 11 a.m at Hoglund Stadium at the University of Kansas.blue jay logo

Other first round pairings that have been released by the Kansas State High School Activities Association include Wichita Northwest ( 17-5 ) vs. Shawnee Mission Northwest ( 17-5 ) on the same side of the bracket as Junction City.

On the other side of the bracket, Lawrence Free State ( 18-4 ) plays Wichit – Haysville Campus ( 15-7 ) and Derby ( 18-4 ) meets Olathe South ( 15-7 ).

The tournament continues on Friday, May 30, with semifinal and final round contests.

Wildcats Fall in Big 12 Baseball Tournament

Oklahoma State defeated Kansas State 10-1 in second round play of the Big 12 Baseball Tournament.

The Wildcats remain alive, however, in the double-elimination tournament.

The Wildcats play Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Friday.

19 JCHS Track and Field Athletes Qualify for State

Jaylene Brime won the boys triple jump with a mark of 42’7 1/2 and the Lady Jay 4 x 800 relay team finished first in 9:48.2 at the Class 6A Regional Track Meet in Hutchinson on Thursday.

Those were the top finishes for Junction City in the regional, which saw a total of 19 JCHS track andblue jay logofield athletes qualify for next week’s state meet in Wichita.

Junction City coach Randall Zimmerman said the Blue Jays and Lady Jays did “an outstanding job, competed really really well.”

Zimmerman noted many of the JCHS entries are quality as they head to the state meet May 29-30 at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.

The Blue Jays finished fourth in the boys team competition, and sixth in the girls team scoring. Maize finished first in both boys and girls competition.

Blue Jay Baseball Going to State

The Junction City Blue Jay baseball team is headed to the Class 6A State Tournament.

Junction City defeated Topeka High 4-3 and Washburn Rural by the same score, 4-3 to win their 6A Regional Tournament at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.

Tate Zimmerman got the pitching win in game one and Charlie Peyla was the winning pitcher in game two for Junction City ( 12-10 ).

The Class 6A State Tournament is at Hoglund Stadium at the University of Kansas in Lawrence on May 28-29.

This marks the second consecutive year the Blue Jay baseball team has qualified for the state tournament. One year ago Junction City fell to Manhattan in a first round game.
