Mountaineers Defeat Kansas State

wildcat twoMORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – Jonathan Holton had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead No. 9 West Virginia to a 70-55 victory over Kansas State on Tuesday night, giving the Mountaineers a sweep of the season series.

It was Holton’s second double-double in three games for the Mountaineers (17-3, 6-2 Big 12).

Justin Edwards had 11 points for Kansas State (12-8, 2-6), which cut West Virginia’s lead to single digits in the second half just once. Dean Wade had nine points for the Wildcats, who connected on 20 of 57 shots (35.1 percent), and lost for the fifth straight time.

West Virginia, which led 34-25 at halftime, picked up consecutive technical fouls in the first half with no time going off the clock.

Jones Earns Second National Athlete of the Week Honor

AKELA

MANHATTAN, Kan.
– After nearly breaking the NCAA pentathlon record at last weekend’s DeLoss Dodds Invitational, senior Akela Jones was honored with her second USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week award this season, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Jones fell just 35 points shy of the record with 4,643 total points in the meet’s pentathlon. The record of 4,678 was set during last season’s NCAA Indoor Championships by Georgia’s Kendell Williams.

The St. Michael, Barbados, native started the event off with first-place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (8.25) and then high jump (1.85m/6-00.75) to bring her total score to 2,114 points through the first two events of the pentathlon.

After earning 727 points in the shot put, she dominated in long jump with a leap of 6.64m/21-09.50 to earn 1,053 points to move her meet score to 3,894 points heading into the 800-meter run. She then earned 749 in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.63 to finish the day with 4,643 points.

Jones earned national weekly accolades earlier this month (Jan. 12) after setting a personal best in high jump (1.87m/6-01.50) and nearly missing her personal best in the 60-meter hurdles (8.17). She took first place in both events, and both were the top mark in the nation.

As the 2016 season stands, Jones is the collegiate leader in both the pentathlon and high jump, is No. 2 in the long jump and is No. 4 in the 60-meter hurdles. Per the IAAF, she’s the world leader in the pentathlon, No. 3 in the long jump, No. 7 in the high jump and No. 16 in the 60 hurdles.

K-State returns to action this Saturday as it travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to compete in the New Mexico Collegiate Invitational.

Kansas Ranked Fourth

jayhawkAssociated Press college basketball poll. Unlike last week, when the Sooners were a unanimous No. 1, North Carolina is a close second.

Oklahoma (16-2) received 36 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel on Monday, seven more than the Tar Heels (18-2), who remained second.

Iowa jumped from ninth to third, the Hawkeyes’ highest ranking since January 1987. They were followed by Kansas and Texas A&M, which is at its highest ranking ever. Villanova, Xavier, Maryland, West Virginia and Providence round out the Top Ten.

Wichita State, Oregon and Notre Dame – all of whom have been ranked during the season – are the week’s newcomers replacing Butler, Southern California and South Carolina.

Aryus Jones Wins at 160 Pounds

small blue jayJunction City Blue Jay wrestler Aryus Jones went 4-0 in dual competition at the Emporia Dual Wrestling Tournament.

Jones is coming off a severe leg injury in football that had kept him out of action the first part of the wrestling season.

The Blue Jays as a team went 1-4 in the dual competition. But Max Bazan finished 3-2 at 113 pounds and Kamari Smith went 3-2 at 152 pounds.

Wildcats Sweep Deloss Dodds Invitational

toss

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Hosting its third indoor meet of the season, the No. 4 ranked Kansas State women and 20th-ranked men combined for eight first-place finishes as it swept the DeLoss Dodds Invitational in Ahearn Field House on Saturday.

Both the men’s and women’s sides earned wins against Oklahoma State, North Texas and Tulsa en route to the victory on day two of the meet. During the first day of the meet, senior Akela Jones set a school and Ahearn Field House record in the pentathlon with 4,643 total points.

“We are progressing and that is what is most important,” head coach Cliff Rovelto said. “We had some good, quality marks today. We had a lot of people off this weekend in anticipation of traveling next weekend. That being said, we are making very good progress.”

Day two of competition kicked off with the completion of the final three events of the Steve Fritz Men’s Heptathlon. Entering day two of competition in fifth place, junior Adam Deterding used strong efforts in the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000 meter run to take first place with a total score of 4,935 points.

On the track, the Wildcat women’s 4×400 ‘A’ Relay team of Sonia Gaskin,A’Keyla Mitchell, Jordan Matthews and Ranae McKenzie set a new meet record with a mark of 3:44.89, topping the previous record of 3:45.82 set during the 2014 season.

Juniors Kain Ellis and Morgan Wedekind record first-place finishes in the mile run with times of 4:12.06 and 4:58.51, respectively. Senior Sonia Gaskinrecorded her second first-place finish in the 800 meter run of the season with a time of 2:10.55.

Throwers Brett Neelly and Mitch Dixon each recorded wins in their respective throws events. Neelly recorded his third first-place finish of the season in shot put with a mark of 16.93m/55-06.50, while Dixon recorded his first win of the season in weight throw with a mark of 19.27m/63-02.75.

Senior Alyssa Kelly posted her second long jump win of the season, dominating the field with a jump of 5.81m/19-00.75 to win the event.

K-State returns to action next weekend as the team travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to compete in the New Mexico Collegiate Invitational.

Blue Jays Fall to Wichita Bishop Carroll

small blue jayThe Bishop Carroll Eagles used a stout defense to hold Junction City to a shooting percentage of just 35-percent from the field enroute to a 58-45 win over the Blue Jays on Saturday in the third-place consolation game of the McPherson Invitational.

Junction City ( 5-7 ) trailed throughout the ballgame.

Blue Jay coach Pat Battle thought going into the contest it might be a physical type game. “To make a football analogy offensively for sure we were able to move the ball between the 20’s but we had problems in the red zone.” Junction City missed a number of shots in the lane near the basket.

Tyrone Poole led the Blue Jays with 16 points, while Ricardo Erans had 13. Bishop Carroll had a 50-percent shooting field goal shooting percentage for the game.

Junction City finished fourth in the tournament. McPherson captured first place with a 63-54 win over Lawrence Free State in the championship game.

Kansas Overcomes Slow Start to Defeat Texas

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Perry Ellis had 26 points, Wayne Selden Jr. added 19 and No. 3 Kansas countered its sluggish start with a torrid finish to beat streaking Texas 76-67 on Saturday.

Devonte Graham finished with 14 points and Frank Mason III had 13 for the Jayhawks (16-3, 4-3 Big 12), who had played dismally during a two-week stretch since their victory over No. 1 Oklahoma.

Along with losses to West Virginia and Oklahoma State, the Jayhawks struggled to beat TCU.

The Longhorns (12-7, 4-3) looked as if they would keep that malaise going when they built an early lead. But they were unable to get any stops in the second half, when Kansas used a 24-6 run covering more than 9 minutes to seize control in front of another raucous crowd at Allen Fieldhouse.

Connor Lammert had a career-high 15 points before fouling out for Texas. Isaiah Taylor and Eric Davis Jr. scored 13 apiece, and Javan Felix finished with 12.
