Classs 1A Division I State Basketball Tournament moving

KSHAATOPEKA, Kan. – As postseason basketball approaches, the KSHSAA and Fort Hays State University have mutually agreed to relocate this year’s Class 1A Division I state basketball tournament from FHSU to the Civic Center in Dodge City. The state tournament dates remain as scheduled March 9 – 12, 2016.

The Fort Hays State University women’s basketball team has positioned itself to potentially host an NCAA regional tournament March 10, 11, 12 and 14, which would conflict with the state high school tournament. By mutual agreement of FHSU and the KSHSAA, the state tournament will be hosted at the Dodge City Civic Center by the Dodge City Sports Commission.

“Whether or not Fort Hays State succeeds in winning the right to host an NCAA regional, the Class 1A Division I state tournament will remain in Dodge City this year,” said KSHSAA Executive Director, Gary Musselman. “The logistics and lead time in staging a successful state tournament necessitate a decision which is in the best interest of Fort Hays State University and the member schools of the KSHSAA, be made now.”

The Dodge City Sports Commission will be working to provide a positive experience for all participants. The 2,500 seat capacity Civic Center is home to Dodge City Community College basketball and in past decades hosted the Class BB state high school tournaments and the annual Dodge City Tournament of Champions featuring high school basketball teams from across the state.

The Class 1A DII tournaments will also be in Dodge City played at the United Wireless Area.

Chiefs Tight End Kelce has Big Pro Bowl

chiefs logoHONOLULU (AP) — Russell Wilson threw three first-half touchdown passes to lead Team Irvin to a 49-27 victory over Team Rice in the Pro Bowl on Sunday.

The Seattle Seahawks star, who was the first player picked in the all-star game’s draft, led scoring drives on three of Team Irvin’s first four possessions at Aloha Stadium. He threw touchdown passes of 14 and 2 yards to Atlanta Falcons teammates Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman, respectively, in the opening quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Wilson connected with Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley for a 10-yard score.

Minnesota’s Teddy Bridgewater and Tampa Bay’s Jameis Winston each added two TD passes for Team Irvin.

Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce caught two scoring passes for Team Rice. He had 5 catches for 91 yards on the day.

Max Bazan captured first place at 113 pounds and Aryus Jones first at 160 pounds for Junction City. Kamari Smith finished second at 152 pounds, and

Coach Bob Laster credits Jones, who recently returned from a football injury last fall, to bringing another aspect to the mental part of the Blue Jay wrestling team. “We always tell guys, the guy that you wrestle with can make you better. And I think that’s what he’s doing with some of the guys on our team, as well as the physical part of our team . I think our guys have a guy to look up to and see how things are supposed to go, so I think that’s one of the big reasons for some changes going on with our team.”

Logan Roether finished in third place at 120 pounds, John Clark third at 145 pounds,  and Tanner Bogenhagen fourth at 120 pounds for Junction City.

Lady Jays Break into Win Column

small blue jayThree Junction City Lady Jay players scored in double figures enroute to the basketball team’s first win of the season.

Junction City ( 1-12 ) defeated Wichita Southeast 69-51 in the seventh place consolation game of the Glacier’s Edge Tournament in Emporia.

Alana Kramer led the Lady Jays with 18 points, while Ally McKenzie scored 17 and Imari Williams 12 for Junction City.

The Lady Jays jumped out to a 20-17 lead over Wichita Southeast after one quarter, and led 39-32 at halftime.

In other games in the tournament, Olathe South won the championship with a 32-30 win over Leavenworth, Hutchinson defeated Goddard-Eisenhower in the third place consolation game 52-40, and Emporia downed Topeka West in the fifth place consolation game 58-16.

Kansas State Holds on to Down Ole Miss in SEC Challenge 69-64

Kansas State hung on to beat Ole Miss Saturday, 69-64, in the Big 12 SEC Challenge at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats trailed just once in the game when Ole Miss went on a small run starting around the nine minute mark KSU 1-30in the first half, the same time K-State’s Kamau Stokes was helped off the court with an apparent knee injury. He wouldn’t return. Kansas State eventually fought back to take a 38-36 lead into halftime.

“We don’t know what’s wrong with Kamau at this point. They’re going to do an MRI,” reported Bruce Weber following the game.

Losing Stokes took away one of K-State’s scoring threats, but allowed Carlbe Ervin II to come in and play a larger role than normal.

“You know you don’t have to make the big play, he made the simple basketball plays. Him and Austin Budke in the zone made some great passes, there again it’s not a spectacular thing it’s just solid, square up, see things, maybe pass fake, make the play. It was good for him, he needed that.”

With the win Kansas State’s non-conference final now rests at 11-2, and they now move into the back half of their schedule that features home games against Oklahoma, Baylor, Kansas and Texas. They are in action again Wednesday evening on the road in Lawrence for the Sunflower Showdown with Kansas. That game is slated for an 8 pm tip off from Allen Fieldhouse.
