Royals Split Squad Falls to Athletics

small kcrMESA, Ariz. (AP) – Stephen Vogt hit a pair of home runs and drove in four and the Oakland Athletics beat a Kansas City Royals split squad 6-4 on Monday.

Vogt, who underwent elbow surgery about six weeks ago, had been taking batting practice for a week and has been used exclusively as a designated hitter.

“I haven’t been feeling great so to have a day like that lets me trust the elbow,” Vogt said. “It was good to get extended and take a full swing and not feel any pain.”

Mike Moustakas hit a two-run shot for the Royals, who were limited to four hits by Jesse Hahn, Ryan Madson and five other relievers.

“Except for the one mistake to Moustakas he looked outstanding,” Vogt said of Hahn, making his first appearance of the spring. “I had the pleasure of facing him a few days ago and he didn’t help my confidence.”

Josh Reddick added two hits and a RBI and Jed Lowrie added a pair of hits for the A’s.

Chiefs Void Contract of Veteran Linebacker, Hali

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the Kansas City Chiefs voided the contract of veteran linebacker Tamba Hali, who took a pay cut with a reworked deal to remain with the team last season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the Chiefs aren’t allowed to discuss contract matters.

Hali had four voidable years added to his one-year contract so that the team could spread out his signing bonus, thereby creating additional salary cap space last offseason. But the contract also stipulated the Chiefs had until Friday to sign Hali to an extension, otherwise he would become a free agent.

Despite dealing with a bothersome knee much of last season, Hali had 6 1-2 sacks and was voted to his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl. The 10-year veteran will turn 33 in November.

The Kansas City Star first reported that Hali’s contract was voided.
