Chiefs Announce Two Signings

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs signed free-agent cornerback Jamell Fleming and wide receiver Rod Streater on Saturday.

Fleming, a former third-round draft pick out of Oklahoma, appeared in all 16 games for Kansas City last season. He joined the Chiefs in 2014, starting four of the seven games he played that season.

He provides some depth after the departure of Sean Smith in free agency.

Streater has spent the past four seasons with the AFC West-rival Oakland Raiders, though he’s been slowed by injury much of the past two seasons. Streater’s best year came in 2013, when he caught 60 passes for 888 yards and four touchdowns.

He will compete with Albert Wilson and Chris Conley for playing time alongside Jeremy Maclin.

Diamondbacks Get Split-Squad Win Over Royals

small kcrSCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – David Peralta hit his first home run of the spring and Rubby De La Rosa pitched four scoreless innings for Arizona in a Diamondbacks split squad’s 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

De La Rosa, the No. 4 starter in the Diamondbacks’ rotation, had been rocked for five runs in four innings in his first two starts. But he blanked the Royals on four hits, striking out five with no walks, in front of a record Salt River Fields crowd of 13,514.

All three runs came in the first inning off Kansas City starter Kris Medlen, two of them on Peralta’s homer. Medlen settled down after that. He gave up six hits in three innings, striking out two and walking one.

Jayhawks Win Big 12 Tournament

jayhawkKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Devonte Graham matched a career-high with 27 points, Wayne Selden Jr. added 21 and top-ranked Kansas overcame a remarkable performance by West Virginia’s Devin Williams for an 81-71 victory over the ninth-ranked Mountaineers in the Big 12 Tournament title game Saturday night.

Perry Ellis added 17 points for the Jayhawks (30-4), who almost certainly locked up the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament by winning their 10th Big 12 Tournament championship.

Kansas trailed the Mountaineers (26-8) at the break before taking control behind Graham, their sophomore guard. He hit five 3-pointers, was 10 of 10 from the foul line and had a career-high four steals, effortlessly dealing with West Virginia’s trademark pressure all night.

Williams finished with a career-best 31 points and 10 rebounds, but the junior forward was forced to carry the load by himself. Jevon Carter was held to four points after scoring 26 in a semifinal win over No. 6 Oklahoma, and leading scorer Jaysean Paige managed just six points while committing four turnovers.

Six Wildcats to Compete at NCAA Indoor National Championships

wildcat track

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– Six Wildcat track and field student-athletes are set to represent Kansas State at the 2016 Indoor NCAA Track and Field National Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday and Saturday.

Competing for the Wildcats are: Christoff Bryan (high jump); Ifeanyichukwu Otuonye(long jump); Akela Jones (pentathlon, high jump); Kimberly Williamson (high jump);A’Keyla Mitchell (200 meter dash); and Dani Winters (shot put).

Jones opens the first day of competition looking for another shot at breaking the NCAA pentathlon record of 4,678 points set by Georgia’s Kendell Williams at last year’s NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The senior fell just 35 points short of the record at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational with an impressive 4,643 points.

She also recorded a strong outing at the Big 12 Championships two weeks ago, winning the conference title in high jump, long jump and 60 meter hurdles. Her three titles, along with a third-place finish as a member of the 4×400 meter relay team, earned her high-point scorer of the meet with 31.50 points.

The St. Michael, Barbados, native became the first female Wildcat to win three conference titles at the same meet since 1976 when K-State Athletics Hall of Famer Teri Andersonwon the 880 yard run (2:16.6), the mile run (4:51.3) and the two mile run (10:22.3) at the Big Eight Conference meet in Manhattan.

Her stellar indoor season did not go unnoticed as she was named the Big 12 Female Indoor Track and Field Performer of the Year and the USTFCCCA Midwest Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.

Bryan and Otuonye are also coming off strong performances at the conference meet, winning the title in high jump and long jump, respectively. The titles were the first of their careers.

Bryan won the high jump title with a mark 2.22m/7-03.25, just shy of his season best mark of 2.25m/7-04.25 which he set at the Tyson Invitational. He currently holds the second-best mark in the Big 12 and is tied for the third-best mark in Division I.

Fellow jumper Otuonye won his title with a leap of 7.70m/25-03.25. The senior also set his season and personal best at the Tyson Invitational, recording an impressive mark of 7.75m/25-05.25, good for the top mark in the conference and sixth best in Division I.

Williamson and Winters also recorded impressive results at the Big 12 Championships. Winters finished in second place in shot put at the meet with a school record throw of 17.63m/57-10.25, while Williamson also recorded a second-place finish in high jump with a mark of 1.81m/5-11.25.

On the track, Mitchell will look to record a strong performance in the 200 meter dash. She qualified for the finals of the conference meet in the event with a time of 23.32 before finishing in third place with a time 23.16, her season best.

Friday’s competition will begin at 12:15 p.m. with Jones competing in the pentathlon 60 meter hurdles. Otuonye (long jump) begins competition at 5:20 p.m., followed by Mitchell (200 meter dash) and Bryan in (high jump) at 7:55 p.m.

On Saturday, Jones and Williamson will compete for the high jump title at 2:00 p.m., followed by Winters competing in shot put at 5:00 p.m. Mitchell closes out the day with the 200 meter dash finals at 6:00 p.m.

Wildcats Fall to Jayhawks

wildcat twoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Perry Ellis scored 21 points, Frank Mason III added 16 and top-ranked Kansas ran roughshod over weary Kansas State, 85-63, on Thursday in the quarterfinals in the Big 12 Tournament.

The Jayhawks (28-4), who won their 12th consecutive regular-season crown, led 45-30 at halftime before pushing their advantage past 20 for much of the second half. They coasted the rest of their way to a semifinal matchup Friday night with No. 22 Baylor, which handled No. 23 Texas earlier in the day.

Carlton Bragg added a career-high 12 points for Kansas. Devonte Graham finished with 11.

The eighth-seeded Wildcats (17-16) were led by Justin Edwards, who hit five 3s and had 23 points. But the senior guard didn’t get nearly as much help as he had in a first-round victory over Oklahoma State.

Chiefs Announce Signing of Howard and Hali in Free Agency

chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have begun to announce their wave of free-agent signings, starting with veteran linebacker Tamba Hali and defensive tackle Jaye Howard.

Hali agreed to a three-year deal to remain with Kansas City on Tuesday, while Howard reached a two-year deal to stay with the Chiefs on Wednesday. Both were valuable pieces to a defense that last season led the Chiefs to their first playoff victory in more than two decades.

Kansas City also agreed to a three-year deal with veteran linebacker Derrick Johnson, a five-year contract with former Browns offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz and contracts with backup linebackers Frank Zombo and Jonathan Massaquoi during the first day of free agency.

Those contracts are expected to be announced once they are signed.

K-State Defeats Creighton 8-2

Release from K-State Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State scored eight unanswered runs while the Wildcat pitching staff limited Creighton to two hits after the first inning as the Wildcats extended their winning streak to six with an 8-2 victory over the Bluejays on Wednesday at Tointon Family Stadium.unnamed (3)

Despite Creighton (6-4) scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first, K-State (8-4) – behind a group of six pitchers – quieted the Bluejay bats over the final eight innings. Relievers Brogan Heinen, Jordan Floyd and Jacob Ruder did not surrender any hits over their combined four innings pitched from the fifth through eighth while Brandon Erickson gave up just one safety in his two frames over the third and fourth.

Creighton, which had its six-game winning streak snapped, finished with five hits – its lowest in a game since the first weekend of the season.

“We got on the pitchers really hard after the weekend (against UAPB), and they took it to heart,” said K-State head coach Brad Hill. “We got on them about pitch location, competitiveness, the whole thing. Today, we stressed getting the ball back down in the (strike) zone. For the most part, they did a nice job with it. I was impressed with all of them.”

Heinen earned the win, the first of his career. The freshman struck out one in his perfect – and career-high – two innings pitched.

The offense, meanwhile, evened the game two-all in the third with two-out RBI by Jake Wodtke and Steve Serratore and then took the lead in the fifth with another pair of two-out runs off an infield single by Jake Scudder.

Wodtke, Serratore and Scudder – along with Clayton Dalrymple and Tyler Wolfe – helped the top of the K-State lineup generate eight of the team’s nine hits. Seniors Dalrymple and Wolfe as well as Scudder turned in two hits each.

The top-five Wildcat hitters also went a combined 5-for-10 with two outs and delivered five of the team’s seven RBI in such situations. Over the six-game winning streak, K-State is hitting .382 (29-for-76) with two outs.

“We’re doing a great job right now with two-out hitting, and getting some clutch RBIs,” said Hill. “Those are the little things that we have to continue to do. “
