Royals Fall to Houston

kcrHOUSTON (AP) – Collin McHugh bounced back from the shortest start of his career by pitching seven scoreless innings and Colby Rasmus hit a two-run homer as the Houston Astros won their home opener over the Kansas City Royals, 8-2, on Monday night.

Carlos Correa had three hits and two RBIs for Houston, Jose Altuve had three hits and rookie Tyler White added a pair of hits for his fourth multi-hit game this year.

McHugh (1-1) allowed eight hits and struck out four to bounce back from his last start, in which he allowed six runs and walked two in 1/3 inning of a 16-6 loss to the Yankees.

Chris Young (0-2) allowed nine hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings. The Astros jumped on him early and were up by 1 in the first after an RBI double by Correa when Rasmus launched a towering shot to the second deck in right field to make it 3-0.

Luis Valbuena had an RBI double, Jason Castro drove in a run with a triple and Altuve had a run-scoring single in the fourth to push the lead to 6-0.

Chiefs Defensive End Retiring

small chiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Mike DeVito is retiring after nine NFL seasons.

DeVito, 31, announced his retirement Monday on Twitter, saying it was his wife, Jessie, who was most influential in his decision. The couple is expecting a second child.

DeVito says: “I have people here that will expect me to be here and be a father and be a husband and a leader of my family.”

Known for his leadership in the locker room and his versatility – he played three positions on the line in 2012 – DeVito spent his first six seasons with the New York Jets, twice going to the playoffs. He then joined the Chiefs for the last three seasons, but appeared in only one game in 2014 after tearing his Achilles tendon.

DeVito had a career-high three sacks last season as the Chiefs rallied from 1-5 to make the playoffs.

Coach Braden, “The Bombers had a very good day at Bennington.  Several of our athletes had personal best throws and times today. For the boys: senior Zack Melius, who has been hampered with a hamstring pull, threw the javelin (for only the second time in his life), and took home the silver medal in that event!  Junior J.J. Judy threw a personal best and took home the gold in the discus.  Junior Brian VonHoltz threw a personal best in the shot put and took home the bronze.  Sophomores Cody Pollman vaulted to a bronze medal in the pole vault and Jeffrey Thompson placed 6th in the 800 meter run with a very competitive effort.  Freshman Kaleb White impressed us all with both his performances in the high jump and pole vault.  For the girls: the 4 x 400 meter relay team of senior Joanna Wright, senior Sara Casaus, senior Dani Sanders, and junior Kenzy Barrett ran extremely well for their first relay of the season.  Junior Sierra Otto competed very hard for her 6th place the 100 M. H. hurdles and freshman Sydney Barker surprised all of us with her sub three minute performance in the open 800.  Friday was a beautiful day for a track meet and our performances were extremely encouraging since this was only our second meet of the season.

Next Friday the Bombers get up bright and early to travel to Wichita for the Shocker Pre-State Challenge.             Ladd Braden

Wildcats Rally to Defeat Texas

ksu baseball sundayMANHATTAN, Kan. – A pinch-hit RBI single by Cade Bunnell scored the first of two runs in the eighth inning while a trio of pitchers limited Texas to one run for the first eight frames as K-State came back and defeated Texas, 3-2, on Sunday at Tointon Family Stadium.

The Wildcats (14-19, 1-8 Big 12) avoided the sweep at the hands of Texas (14-18, 5-4 Big 12) and earned their first Big 12 win by overcoming a Longhorn second-inning run with a game-tying run in the seventh and two in the eighth. Clayton Dalrymple tied it with a sacrifice fly in the seventh while Bunnell gave K-State its first lead of the weekend with his two-out single off the glove of a diving Zane Gurwitz up the middle in the eighth. Quintin Crandall later scored in the frame when Texas failed in its attempt to put out pinch-runner Sam Chadick in a rundown following a single by Michael Smith.

Gore Scores on Wild Pitch in Tenth, Royals Beat Twins

kcr fourKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Speedy pinch runner Terrance Gore streaked home on a wild pitch with two outs in the 10th inning, scoring with a headfirst slide to lift the Kansas City Royals over the winless Minnesota Twins 4-3 Sunday.

The World Series champion Royals rallied for two runs in the ninth to tie it, then dropped the Twins to 0-6. This is Minnesota’s worst start since the Washington Senators moved to the Twin Cities in 1961.

Christian Colon drew a leadoff walk in the 10th from Trevor May (0-1). Gore then made his first appearance of the season, running for Colon, and dashed to third on May’s throwing error on a pickoff attempt.

May retired the next two batters and issued a walk. With a 1-2 count on Lorenzo Cain, May threw a breaking ball that bounced off catcher John Ryan Murphy’s chest protector and skittered to the right side of the plate.

Gore beat Murphy’s throw to May covering the plate. May slammed down his hand in frustration after Gore scored.
