A LOOK AT K-STATE

  • Guided by 2015 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Bill Snyder, who is in the midst of his 25th season at the helm of the Wildcats, K-State is looking to rebound from a 26-13 defeat at No. 8/7 Stanford in the season opener.
  • K-State’s defense gave the Wildcats a chance in the second half as it allowed just one touchdown and 70 total offensive yards to the Cardinal over the final 30 minutes.
  • The game at Stanford featured the return of captains DB Dante Barnett and QB Jesse Ertz, both of whom were injured and lost for the season in last year’s opener.
  • Barnett had four tackles against the Cardinal, including 2.5 TFLs and a sack. It was the second time in his career he had at least 2.0 TFLs.
  • Ertz went 16-of-34 for 207 yards and a touchdown while rushing 13 times for 20 yards.

A LOOK AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC

  • FAU comes to K-State with a 1-1 record following a 38-10 defeat at No. 25 Miami last week.
  • The Owls and Hurricanes battled to a scoreless first quarter, but FAU gave up 406 yards in the final 45 minutes.
  • QB Jason Driskel has averaged 227 passing yards through the first two games with two TDs and a pick.
  • RB Greg Howell is averaging 101.5 yards thus far, which features a 128-yard game in the season opener.

A LOOK AT THE SERIES

  • Saturday’s game marks the second time K-State and FAU will meet on the gridiron after a 45-0 Wildcat victory in Manhattan in 2006.
  • K-State is 21-4 all-time against current members of Conference USA.
  • The contest is the fourth against C-USA members in the last three years as the Wildcats defeated UTEP in 2014 and both UTSA and Louisiana Tech last year.

    HOME OPENERS

  • K-State holds an 88-27-5 (.754) record all-time in home openers.
  • Under head coach Bill Snyder, the Wildcats are 22-2 (.917) in their home debut.
  • The Sept. 17 home opener this year is the latest home opener for the Wildcats since 2001 when K-State defeated New Mexico State, 64-0, on Sept. 22 that season.
  • K-State’s home opener in 2001 was originally scheduled for Sept. 15, against Louisiana Tech, but that game was postponed due to the tragic events of Sept. 11.
  • Due to those events, Saturday’s game is the latest scheduled home opener since the 1992 season when the Wildcats topped Montana, 27-12, on Sept. 19.

Officials Suspended

football clip artThe Mid-American Conference says the eight-man officiating crew that botched the end of the Central Michigan-Oklahoma State game has been suspended for two games.

And the Big 12 announced Sunday that the two-person video replay crew that worked the same game also has been suspended for two games.

Officials mistakenly gave Central Michigan an untimed final play from midfield after Oklahoma State was penalized for intentional grounding while trying to run off the last four seconds of the fourth quarter with a three-point lead.

On that play, the Chippewas scored a touchdown on a long pass and lateral to win 30-27. The referee admitted afterward that an error was made by extending the game after a loss-of-down penalty.

Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder voiced his protest, but the result of the game was final.

Chiefs Overcome 17-Point Fourth Quarter Deficit to Defeat Chargers

small chiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith dived for a touchdown on the first possession of overtime, completing the Kansas City Chiefs’ frantic rally from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the San Diego Chargers 33-27 in their season opener Sunday.

Smith threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns, the second a back-shoulder fade to Jeremy Maclin with just over nine minutes left in the fourth quarter that trimmed the Chiefs’ deficit to 27-17.

Cairo Santos kicked a 33-yard field goal a few minutes later, and after forcing a three-and-out, Spencer Ware finished off a four-play drive with a touchdown plunge to knot it at 27.

Kansas City needed 10 plays to march 75 yards in overtime, and Smith finished off one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history with his keeper from the 2-yard line on third-and-goal.

Royals Shut Out White Sox

kcr smallCHICAGO (AP) — Ian Kennedy and three relievers combined on a two-hitter, and the Kansas City Royals beat Chris Sale and the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Sunday.

Kendrys Morales homered on Sale’s first pitch of the second and Eric Hosmer did the same in the fourth. The Royals won their second straight to stay four games behind Baltimore for the final AL wild-card spot.

Kennedy (11-9) walked four, but Adam Eaton’s leadoff single was the only hit off the right-hander in six innings. He improved to 5-0 in his last six starts.

Peter Moylan and Kelvin Herrera each threw a perfect inning before Wade Davis worked around Eaton’s single and a walk in the ninth for his 24th save.

Blue Jays Improve to 2-0

small-blue-jayA pass interception with 17-seconds remaining the fourth quarter helped preserve a 26-21 Blue Jay win over the Topeka High Trojans.

Junction City led 26-21 late in the fourth quarter, but there was a fumble with 24-seconds remaining as the Blue Jays were trying to snap the ball to take a knee and run out the clock. The Trojans recovered and had one last chance to try and drive down the field, but on the very next play Blue Jay linebacker Tim Bell picked off a Corey Thomas pass and that sealed the victory.

Junction City coach Randall Zimmerman said the Blue Jays made the game too close. “I’m proud of our kids. They really competed hard.” But after scoring two early touchdown passes on pass plays from Ryan Hennington to Jovon Baldwin and jumping out to a 14-0 lead, the Blue Jays struggled to score once they were deep inside the Trojans territory.

“Got up on a very good team. We get the ball inside the 40 the next two possessions and don’t get points out of it.” Zimmerman added when his team gets good field position they have to find a way to get the ball in the end zone.

Hennington completed 10 of 26 passing, but it was his running that stood out in the game. He rushed 18 times for 216 yards for Junction City including a 70-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

The Blue Jays held the Trojans to 82 yards rushing, while quarterback Corey Thomas was 13-25 passing with one touchdown.

Junction City, 2-0, hosts Topeka West next Friday while Topeka High hosts Emporia.

Royals Fall to White Sox

kcr fourCHICAGO (AP) — Carlos Rodon struck out a season-high nine over six innings, Adam Eaton doubled twice and scored two runs and the Chicago White Sox beat Kansas City 7-2 on Friday night to prevent the Royals from gaining ground in the playoff race.

Rodon (7-8) fanned Paulo Orlando with the bases loaded on his 116th pitch to end the sixth inning and move to 5-0 in his last seven starts.

Kendrys Morales had a two-run single in the first inning for Kansas City, which has dropped six of nine and remained four games behind the second wild-card after Detroit beat Baltimore.

Eaton doubled to lead off the first and fifth innings off Yordano Ventura (10-10) and scored each time on Melky Cabrera RBIs. Tyler Saladino had three hits and drove in two runs in Chicago’s third straight win over a playoff contender.
