K-State to Host ‘Hoop Scoop for Women’ Clinic October 29

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber and his staff will host the American Cancer Society’s Hoop Scoop for Women clinic on Saturday, October 29 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Ice Family Basketball Center.hoop scoop 2

The clinic will give attendees an exclusive look at the ins-and-outs of the men’s basketball program as well as provide personal interaction with members of the coaching staff and student-athletes.

The third annual event includes:

  • Special welcome from head coach Bruce Weber
  • Presentations by the coaching and support staff
  • Q&A session with K-State men’s basketball student-athletes
  • Tour of the Ice Family Basketball Center and the Vanier Family Football Complex
  • Catered lunch at the Ahearn Fund Student-Athlete Performance Table
  • Silent and live auction
  • Clear tote bag that can be used at all K-State Athletics events
  • Nike gift
  • Discounted ticket offer to any home non-conference game
  • Invitation to watch practice

The cost is $50 per person with all the proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer.

In addition to the clinic, attendees can bid on a number of silent auction items, including an overnight package for the Wildcat Classic at the Sprint Center against Washington State on Saturday, December 10, a loge box for the Baylor game on Saturday, January 14, 2017, four courtside seats and a restaurant gift card for the Baylor game and dinner at Colbert Hills for two couples hosted by Bruce and Megan Weber as well as other items, including a personalized Nike jersey and signed basketballs by Bruce Weber and women’s coach Jeff Mittie.

The deadline to register for the event is Friday, October 28. Reservations are limited to the first 150 registrants.

It is recommended that all participants dress in casual, purple attire and sneakers.

Basketball Teams to Hold Open Scrimmage Saturday

kstate basketballMANHATTAN, Kan. – Fans will get a chance to see the Kansas State men’s and women’s basketball teams in actionon Saturday, as each squad will hold an open scrimmage at Bramlage Coliseum prior to the Texas Tech football game.

The women’s team will scrimmage from 2-3:00 p.m., with the men following from 3:15-4 p.m.

Fans will also have the opportunity to purchase men’s and women’s basketball tickets during the scrimmages. Ticket representatives will be stationed on the west concourse near sections 9 and 10 to process ticket orders or answer questions from interested fans. Current season-ticket holders are also invited to upgrade their existing seats or add additional tickets to their account.

Season tickets for women’s basketball start at only $20 for men’s basketball and football season ticket holders. Tickets for the matchup with UConn on Sunday, December 11, will also be available for just $5. The Big Game mini plan for men’s basketball is $250 and includes 10 games, the KU game on Big Monday, February 6 and all nine weekend games.

Armed with a veteran roster, the Wildcats will look to build on their summer trip to Italy and Switzerland with the return of nine lettermen and six players returning with starting experience, highlighted by All-Big 12 Third Team selection Wesley Iwundu and All-Newcomer honorees Barry Brown and Dean Wade. Overall, the squad returns five of their top six scorers from last season, along with nearly 70 percent of their rebounding, assist, steal and minute totals.

Under third-year head Jeff Mittie, the women’s basketball team returns nine letter winners from a squad that reached the second round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats will be led by 2016 All-Big 12 First Team selection and two-time Big 12 All-Defensive Team honoree Breanna Lewis and 2016 All-Big 12 Second Team selectionKindred Wesemann. Overall, K-State returns 75 percent of its scoring and assists and 87 percent of its rebounding.

Women’s single-game tickets for the 18-game home schedule went on sale to the public October 3, including a new off of discounted general admission tickets when purchased before gameday. Advance GA tickets are only $5, a savings of $3. Prices for single game tickets this season are: $5 for general admission youth military and senior citizens, $8 general admission adult, $9 for reserved bench/cushion seating and $12 for chairback.

Ticket packages are available now for the K-State-Connecticut matchup. A $20 chairback ticket package that includes an exclusive t-shirt is available until Tuesday, December 1 or while supplies last. A $38 Wildcat 4 Pack is another affordable option and includes four general admission tickets and four $10 concessions vouchers.

Men’s single-game tickets for the 18-game home schedule, excluding the Kansas game, went on sale to the public on October 3 with exhibition and non-conference game tickets starting at $10. Several season ticket packages as well as the Holiday, Pick 5 and Big Game Mini-Plans are also currently on sale.

The men’s basketball team plays the first of their two exhibition games on Friday, October 28 when the Wildcats host Pittsburg State at 7 p.m., while the women’s squad opens their two-game exhibition slate on Friday, November 4against Washburn at 5:30 p.m.

Mark Scroggins, Bryan Goebel Win PBA50 Regional Titles in Junction City

Junction City, Kan., (October 3, 2016) – Mark Scroggins of Canyon, Texas, and Bryan Goebel of Shawnee, Kan., won joint PBA50 Southwest/Midwest Regional events in a doubleheader weekend at Junction City Bowl.

On Saturday, Scroggins, bowling in his first regional event for players 50 and older, defeated Goebel, 189-173, to win his first PBA50 title. Goebel opened in the ninth frame of the championship match, allowing Scroggins to clinch the victory.

On Sunday, Goebel battled Mark Scroggins’ twin brother, Mike, also from Amarillo, Texas, through qualifying and the first part of the round-robin match play finals. Goebel then built a comfortable lead, holding off a hard-charging Kerry Fulford of Ft. Worth, Texas, who wound up in second place, 98 pins behind. Goebel finished the 15-game event with 3,324 total pins, including bonus, while Fulford ended with a 3,226 pinfall total.

Saint Xavier Volleyball Results

Saint X defeated Topeka Lutheran 25-16 and 33-31.

The Lady Rams fell to Flint Hills Christian 25-18 and 25-15.

Flint Hills Christian defeated Topeka Lutheran 25-14 and 26-24.

Lady Jays Finish Seventh in Centennial League Tennis Tournament

The doubles team of Codi Post and Jordan Dombrowski led the Lady Jay tennis team in the Centennial League Tournament at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka. They finished 4-2 on the day and earned a sixth place medal.

Ally McKenzie was the top singles performer for Junction City, going 1-2 in pool play, but then capped off her day with two consecutive wins in bracket play to earn ninth place.

The doubles team of Brianna Talley and Anne Kim went 2-4 to finish 14th.

Overall Junction City finished seventh in the team competition with 43 points. Washburn Rural captured the Centennial League title with 90 points, followed by Seaman with 74, Manhattan 58, and Shawnee Heights with 56 points.

The Lady Jays travel to Wichita East High School on Saturday to play in a Class 6A Regional Tournament.

K-State Track and Field Looking for Meet Officials

The K-State track and field program is looking for individuals who are interested in becoming wildcat twocertified officials for home meets. A certification course will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, in the Legends Room on the concourse level of Bramlage Coliseum.

Please RSVP to Greg Watson, assistant track and field coach, at gwatson@kstatesports.com by Sunday, Oct. 16.

The cost of the course is $30, which will be reimbursed with the payment of working your first meet. Each meet pays a rate of $50 per day.

Individuals with previous track and field experience or knowledge are preferred but not required. Lunch will be provided.

Erik Kynard, Jr. Named Assistant Track and Field Coach

ERIK KYNARD JRMANHATTAN, Kan. – Former Kansas State track and field national champion and two-time Olympian Erik Kynard, Jr., has been named an assistant track and field coach, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto announced on Monday.

Kynard will assist Rovelto with the high jumpers and combined eventers, while also helping in recruiting efforts.

“We are really excited to have Erik back as part of the team,” Rovelto said about Kynard. “He has been training here in Manhattan for a couple of years so the athletes have really gotten to know him. He will play a big role both in training and recruiting.”

During his career at K-State, Kynard won the Outdoor NCAA Championship in the high jump in 2011 and 2012 with marks of 2.28m/7-06 and 2.34m/7-08, respectively. On the national stage, he would go on to earn All-American honors eight times, both indoors and outdoors, seven of which were first team honors.

Kynard also boasts a strong Big 12 resume, winning three-straight conference titles, both indoors and outdoors, in the high jump from 2011-13. As a result of his success in the conference, he was a multiple time Big 12 Athlete of the Week, a two-time USTFCCCA Field Athlete of the Year and a Bowerman Award semifinalist.

The Toledo, Ohio, native still holds the indoor and outdoor high jump school records, which he set during his senior season in 2013, as well as the Indoor Big 12 Championship record, which he also set during his senior season.

Kynard was the Wildcat men’s high point scorer seven times in his career, including four times during the indoor season and three times in outdoor play. He was also named Most Outstanding Freshman for the team, both indoor and outdoor, and was a four-time Most Valuable Performer for the team while earning four letters.

On the international stage, Kynard’s career has been highlighted by his performance in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, where he took home the Silver Medal with a mark of 2.33m/7-08 in first-ever Games.

Most recently, Kynard competed in the 2016 Olympic Games, where he came in sixth place with a final mark of 2.33m/7-08. He also won his first-ever Diamond League title, sealing the victory in Brussels, Belgium with a final jump of 2.32m/7-07.25. Over the course of the Diamond League series, Kynard earned two first-place finishes, two-second place finishes and one third-place finish. He concluded the competition with 46 points.

The track and field team opens the 2016-17 season on December 9 as the Wildcats host the Carol Robinson Winter Pentathlon, followed by the K-State Winter Invitational on December 10. Both meets will be held in Ahearn Field House.
