GAME 2 – QUICK HITTERS

  • Kansas State continues its homestand on Tuesday, as the Wildcats host their second straight Summit League opponent in Omaha (1-1) at 7 p.m. The game is the second of a four-game homestand to start the season, which includes Hampton on Sunday and Robert Morris on Nov. 22.
  • K-State opened the season with an 82-55 win over fellow Summit League foe Western Illinois on Friday night, as sophomore Barry Brown paced four Wildcats in double figures with a game-high 18 points.
  • After shooting just 32.4 percent in the first half, K-State caught fire in the second half, knocking down 62.5 percent (15-of-24) of its field goals, including all 7 3-pointers, against WIU. Keyed by a big trey from rookie Xavier Sneed, the Wildcats ended the game on a 25-6 run in last 7:35.
  • Brown was joined in double figures by senior Wesley Iwundu (17), Sneed (17) and sophomore Kamau Stokes (11). Brown is the only Wildcat to score in double figures in both exhibitions and the first game.
  • Senior D.J. Johnson grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds against WIU, which is the most in a season opener since Ron Anderson had 12 in 2008.
  • Iwundu started his 90th career game on Friday night, which propelled him to a tie for 10th all-time in school history with Tyrone Adams (1978-82). He has played in 65 consecutive games, including a streak of 53 starts.
  • K-State is now 88-25 (.779) all-time in season openers dating back to its first season in 1903, including a 76-9 (.894) mark at home.
  • The Wildcats are 30-2 all-time against teams from the Summit League, including 29-0 record at home. This will be just the second meeting with Omaha on the hardwood after posting an 84-66 win on Dec. 2, 2014.
  • K-State is looking for a 2-0 start for the 13th time in last 14 seasons, including the fourth time in the last 5 seasons under Bruce Weber.
  • K-State has an 80-5 (.941) record at home in non-conference play dating back to 2006-07, including a 78-4 (.951) mark during the regular season. The squad has won 69 of its last 72 non-conference home games.

A SUCCESSFUL OPENER

  • K-State officially opened the 2016-17 season on Friday with an 82-55 win over Western Illinois.
  • With the win, K-State is now 88-25 (.776) all-time in season openers dating back to 1903, including 76-9 at home.
  • Head coach Bruce Weber is 17-2 (.888) all-time in season openers in his career, including 4-1 at K-State.
  • The Wildcats led for more 36 minutes, including as high as 28 points… The team connected on 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field, including 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from 3-point range, while they held the Leathernecks to 36.5 percent shooting (19-of-52), including the first 5:57 without a field goal… It marked the 50th opponent held under 60 points during the Weber tenure.
  • K-State scored 47 points in the second half on 62.5 percent (27-of-61) shooting, including hitting all 7 3-pointers, and knocked down 90.9 percent (10-of-11) of its free throws… The squad shot just 32.4 percent (12-of-37) in the first half.
  • K-State ended the game on a 25-6 run (over the last 7:35) after Western Illinois closed the gap to 57-49 with 7:51 to play.
  • Freshman Xavier Sneed helped ignite a 12-0 run by the Wildcats with a 3-pointer from the corner at the 7:18mark.
  • Sophomore Barry Brown was one of four Wildcats in double figures with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 32 minutes… Senior Wesley Iwundu (17), Sneed (17) and sophomore Kamau Stokes (11) also scored in double figures, as the Wildcats moved to 30-8 under Weber when at least 4 Wildcats score double digits.
  • Brown is the only Wildcat to score in double figures in both exhibitions and the first game, posting 17 vs. Pittsburg State (10/28) and 15 vs. Washburn (11/4)… He is shooting a combined 58.6 percent (17-of-29) in those three games.
  • Iwundu nearly posted his third double-double in an opener, finishing with 9 rebounds… He tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds vs. Northern Colorado in 2014 and 23 points and 10 rebounds vs. UMES in 2015… He did not play in his sophomore opener.
  • Senior D.J. Johnson corralled a career-best 12 rebounds to go with 7 points vs. Western Illinois, which were the most rebounds by a Wildcat in a season opener since Ron Anderson also had 12 boards against Florida A&M on Nov. 14, 2008.
  • In addition to his 11 points, Stokes dished out a career-tying 5 assists to just 1 turnover… It was his first game since going down a season-ending injury against Ole Miss on Jan. 30, which forced him to miss the last 12 games.
  • Five Wildcats made their debuts (Sneed, Isaiah Maurice, Brian Patrick, Pierson McAtee and Kade Kinnamon).

 

THE OPPONENT: OMAHA

  • Omaha enters Tuesday’s game with a 1-1 record after splitting a West Coast trip to start the season with a 74-60 win over UC Santa Barbara and an 82-72 loss at USC… The Mavericks led the Trojans for 28 minutes before falling in the second half.
  • Omaha is averaging 73 points on 38.3 percent shooting, including 28.8 percent from 3-point range, with 40.5 rebounds, 12 assists, 5.5 steals and 3.5 blocks per game… The team is allowing 71 points per game on 38.8 percent shooting.
  • The Mavericks are led by seniors Marcus Tyus and Tre’Shawn Thurman, who are averaging 21 and 17 points, respectively… Tyus, who is shooting 48.3 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from 3-point range, nearly single-handedly beat USC, going for 33 points on 11-of-18 field goals, including 6 treys, while Thurman added 20 points and 14 rebounds against the Trojans.
  • Omaha returns eight lettermen, including three starters, from a team that posted an 18-14 record, including a third-place finish in the Summit League with a 10-6 mark, and advanced to the CBI First Round… The Mavericks crushed Saint Mary’s (104-58) a season ago, while they had close calls at Colorado (82-87), Minnesota (90-93) and Wyoming (75-76).
  • Head coach Derrin Hansen has a 180-153 overall record in his 12th season at the helm.

 

BREAKING DOWN THE SERIES

  • Tuesday’s contest will mark the second meeting between K-State and Omaha on the hardwood and the first since 2014.
  • The Wildcats connected on 53.3 percent of its field goals, including 60 percent in the second half, in an 84-66 win over Omaha on Dec. 2, 2014… Nino Williams led three players in double figures with a team-high 19 points… Two Wildcats – Wesley Iwundu and Mason Schoen – return from playing in that 2014 contest… Iwundu posted 2 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal in a start in 18 minutes, while Schoen registered no statistics in one minuteof action.
  • K-State is 30-2 against Summit League schools with a 29-0 mark at home… The losses came at Oral Roberts in 1978 and 1985.

Dillons Sunflower Showdown Set for 11 a.m., Kick on FS1

november-26MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference and FOX Sports announced Monday morning that K-State’s home finale against in-state rival Kansas on November 26, will kick off at 11 a.m., and shown to a national audience on FS1.

It marks the second time this season the Wildcats will appear on FS1, while it is the fourth-straight year the network will carry the Dillons Sunflower Showdown. The Wildcats hold a seven-game winning streak in the series by an average score of 43-13.

Fewer than 60 adjacent seats remain for the game against the Jayhawks, and those tickets can be purchased through the K-State Athletics Ticket office online at www.k-statesports.com/tickets, by phone at 1-800-221-CATS or in the main ticket office inside Bramlage Coliseum.

Elks Lodge to Hold Annual Hoop Shoot

little basketballsJunction City Elks Lodge will hold their annual Hoop Shoot ( Free Throw ) contest on Saturday, December 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Freshman Success Academy Gym.

The contest is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 13.

Participants must be no older than 13 as of April 1, 2017 to compete. Registration will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Bring a copy of a birth certificate to show proof of age.

Blue Jays Celebrate Successful Football Season

small-blue-jayThe Junction City Blue Jays wrapped up their 2016 football season with the team awards assembly Sunday night at the senior high.

Head Coach Randall Zimmerman said coming out of their freshman year this group of seniors was challenged to do something special. “They got very, very close. They did many things very special, but they got very close out on the field as well. A couple of plays I believe, just a couple of plays away from being undefeated this year and continuing on down the road and those kind of things. We ran into a very, very tough west side.” Zimmerman referring to the playoffs on the west side of the Class 6A bracket.

A number of individual awards were presented.

–Quarterback Ryan Henington named Offensive Player of the Year

–Kicker Wayne Shirley Special Teams Player of the Year

–Safety Aryus Jones Defensive Player of the Year

–Jordan Bailey, Aryus Jones were Al Simpler Award winners. That honor remembers the former longtime Blue jay coach and recognizes players who unselfishly made a significant contribution to the team.

–The Black Lion Award recipients were Ryan Henington and Zach Terry. That award recognizes players who personify team play.

–The Joseph Sinegal Award, named in memory of the late Blue Jay defensive lineman, was presented to Ryan Henington and Jalen Brooks

–The Malcom Tibbets Award for most inspirational players to Jovon Baldwin and Tim Bell

–Scout Offense Player of the Year recipients were Logan Roether and Corbin Sanner

–Scout Defense Player of the Year was Victor Brooks

Chiefs Win in Closing Seconds

chiefs logoMarcus Peters stripped Kelvin Benjamin with 20 seconds left, Cairo Santos kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired, and the Kansas City Chiefs overcame a 17-point deficit to top the Carolina Panthers 20-17 on Sunday.

The game was tied when Benjamin caught a pass from Cam Newton, and Peters ripped the ball from his arms . Santos’ fourth field goal of the day split the uprights, lifting the Chiefs (7-2) to their fifth straight victory and 17th win in their last 19 games.

Eric Berry also returned a Newton interception 42 yards for a touchdown as Kansas City’s defense came up with big plays when needed. Alex Smith threw for 178 yards and Spencer Ware ran for 61 yards for the Chiefs, who failed to score an offensive touchdown.

Newton threw for 261 yards and a touchdown and ran for 54 yards and a score for the Panthers (3-6).

The game turned late in the third quarter when Chris Jones sacked Newton for a 12-yard loss on third-and-18 at the Kansas City 28, taking the Panthers out of field goal range. Instead of making it a three-possession game, the Panthers were forced to punt.

The Chiefs kicked a field goal to make it 17-6 before Berry picked off a pass that Newton heaved into the air under pressure and returned it for the touchdown. Smith passed to Travis Kelce for the conversion, and Santos’ third field goal tied it with 4:25 left.

K-State at Baylor to Kick at 11 a.m.

k-state footballMANHATTAN, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference and ESPN announced Sunday morning Kansas State’s game at Baylor this Saturday will kick off at 11 a.m., and be televised by ESPN2.

 

Kansas State will be playing on ESPN2 for the second time this year following a 24-21 home victory over Texas on Oct. 22.

 

The Wildcats are looking to snap a four-game Baylor winning streak in the series as K-State’s last victory came in a 36-35 triumph at home in 2011. Kansas State is also in search of its first win in Waco since a 44-10 victory in 2002. Despite the Baylor win streak, each of the last two games have come down to the wire with the Bears claiming a 38-27 win in Waco in 2014 and a 31-24 victory last season in Manhattan.

 

Kansas State’s final home game of the 2016 season is set for Saturday, November 26, against in-state rival Kansas, a game that will kick off at either 11 a.m., or 2:30 p.m., on FS1. The game time for the Dillons Sunflower Showdown will be announced on Monday.

 

Iowa State Rallies to Defeat Kansas

jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jacob Park threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns, Allen Lazard had a career-high 10 receptions for 120 yards and a score and Iowa State slipped past Kansas 31-24 for its first conference win of the season on Saturday.

David Montgomery had a career-high 169 yards rushing for Iowa State (2-8, 1-6 Big 12).

The Cyclones scored on four-consecutive drives, including a 37-yard field goal by Cole Netten that capped the scoring with 2:48 remaining, and Jomal Wiltz intercepted a pass at the ISU 38 to seal it 40 seconds later.

Matthew Wyman’s 37-yard field goal gave Kansas a 17-10 lead early in the second half. Park hit Deshaunte Jones for a 12-yard touchdown and, after a 39-yard TD run by Kansas‘ Ke’aun Kinner, Mitchell Harger scored on a 6-yard run to make it 24-22 with 10 seconds left in the third quarter.

A 46-yard run by Montgomery set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Joel Lanning gave the Cyclones the lead, 28-24, for good with 12:03 left.

Carter Stanley passed for 171 yards and Kinner had 152 yards rushing for Kansas (1-9, Big 12 0-7).

K-State Pulls Away Late to Defeat Western Illinois

PowerCatBarry Brown had 11 of his 18 points in the first half, and Kansas State opened the season with an 82-55 win over Western Illinois on Friday night.

After a slow start by both teams, Brown’s offense got the Wildcats going first and they relinquished the lead only once in the first half. At one point in the first half, Brown had as many points as Western Illinois with at 11 apiece.

Xavier Sneed and Wesley Iwundu added 17 points each for Kansas State while Garret Covington was the high man for Western Illinois with 17 points as well.

Despite struggling from the field for a majority of the contest, the Wildcats led by no less than eight in the second half. Kamau Stokes chipped in 11.

Western Illinois struggled to be consistent from the field shooting 36.5 percent for the ballgame.

Indiana Holds Off Kansas in Overtime

jayhawkHONOLULU (AP) — James Blackmon, Jr. scored 22 of his 26 points after halftime to lift No. 11 Indiana to a season-opening 103-99 overtime victory over No. 3 Kansas on Friday night in the Armed Forces Classic.

The Hoosiers had five players score in double figures with Thomas

Bryant notching a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Curtis Jones had 15 points, OG Anunoby had 13 and Robert Johnson added 10.

Indiana trailed by as many as nine points, but shot 50 percent (14 of 28) in the second half which ended in an 87-87 tie.

Blackmon was 4 of 8 from behind the 3-point line and the Hoosiers were 15 of 31 from beyond the arc. Juwan Morgan had 10 rebounds for the Hoosiers.

Frank Mason III led the Jayhawks with 30 points and nine assists. Devonte Graham scored 16 points, while Carlton Bragg, Jr. and Svi Mykhailiuk chipped in 12 apiece and Landen Lucas added 11.
