Tough Night for Blue Jays and Lady Jays

small-blue-jaySalina Central swept Junction City in boys and girls basketball at the Shenk Gym Tuesday night.

In the girls contest the Mustangs prevailed 61-45, and in the boys contest they defeated the Blue Jays 49-33.

Junction City fell behind 17-2 after one quarter of the girls game and never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way. Alana Kramer did score 17 points for the Lady Jays, who fell to 1-1 on the season.

In the boys game turnovers and missed shots were problems for the Blue Jays, who failed to hit a three-point shot in the entire game. JCHS boys coach Nate Schmitt noted Salina Central coach Doug Finch has been at that school for more than 20 years. “For the people that don’t know basketball that’s such an advantage for your kids, for your coaches. We’re still trying to execute stuff that we just implemented 16 practices ago.” Schmitt added Central is a talented well coached team that shot can shoot well.

Junction City fell to 1-1 in boys play. A.J. Range led the Blue Jays with 14 points.

Both Salina Central teams are 2-0 on the season.

Willis Earns Player of the Year Honors

willis-award

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Paced by senior defensive end Jordan Willis as the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, six Kansas State football players earned All-Big 12 honors from the Associated Press, the organization announced Tuesday.

Willis was a unanimous choice for first-team honors and was joined by junior linebacker Elijah Lee, junior defensive tackle Will Geary and senior offensive lineman Terrale Johnson on the first team. Sophomore defensive back D.J. Reed and sophomore offensive lineman Dalton Risner were named to the second team.

The four players being named first team all-conference performers by the AP are the most for the Wildcats since also having four in 2013, while the four defensive players on the teams are the most since the 2012 Big 12 Championship squad placed five on the list.

Geary earned his second-straight nod on the AP’s first team, while the other five were first-time honorees by the organization.

A product of Kansas City, Missouri, Willis is the first Wildcat to pick up player of the year honors from the Associated Press since Collin Klein earned the offensive nod in 2012. The senior has 11.5 sacks this year to tie the school record, rank first in the conference and rank ninth nationally. He also has 16.5 tackles for loss, ranking second in the Big 12 and 20th in the nation, to go along with 48 total tackles, three pass breakups, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Willis’ outstanding senior campaign has also vaulted him into the top-10 in school history in career sacks (3rd; 26.0), career TFLs (9th; 39.5) and career forced fumbles (t5th; 7). He also ranks seventh in Big 12 history in career sacks.

Lee paces the team and ranks fifth in the Big 12 with 98 tackles this year – including 67 solo stops to rank 21st in the nation – while he has 5.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks and two interceptions. The Blue Springs, Missouri, native now has five career interceptions, the most by a Wildcat linebacker under head coach Bill Snyder.

A native of Topeka, Kansas, Geary has started all 12 games, totaling 44 tackles and 7.0 TFLs from his defensive tackle position. He ended the regular season on a high note, tallying a career-high 3.5 TFLs and a season-best seven tackles at TCU.

Reed, a community-college transfer, has a Big 12-best 18 passes defended this year, which also ranks fifth in the country and fifth in school history. He recorded one of K-State’s three interception-return touchdowns this year when he took a pick 35 yards for a score against Texas Tech.

Johnson, a Manhattan, Kansas, native, and Risner, a product of Wiggins, Colorado, have started all 13 games at right guard and right tackle, respectively. They have blocked for the nation’s 25th-best rushing offense at 232.9 yards per game, including a 290.2 mark over the last six contests. The duo has helped the Wildcats total at least 200 rushing yards in each of the last six games – K-State’s longest streak since the 2003 Big 12 Championship season – including three of the last four games in which the Cats have topped the 300-yard mark.

Winners of five of their last six, the Wildcats will ride momentum into the 2016 AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl as they take on Texas A&M at NRG Stadium on Wednesday, December 28. It is the 20th bowl game in school history and the 18th under Snyder. The game kicks off at 8 p.m., and will be shown to a national audience on ESPN, while it can be heard across the K-State Sports Network and on ESPN Radio.

Public tickets for K-State fans are still available at the K-State Online Ticket Office and through the K-State Athletics Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum or via phone at 1-800-221-CATS. Fans are strongly encouraged to order through K-State’s official allotment to ensure that all Wildcat fans are seated in the official K-State sections of the stadium.  The location for K-State’s ticket allotment at the Texas Bowl is among the best of any bowl game with prime sideline seating locations available for $85.

Student tickets, priced at $85, will go on sale at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday to ICAT members, while all remaining students can purchase tickets beginning Thursday at 8:30 a.m.

  • Although K-State didn’t hold Hampton (11/20) to such a drought, the Wildcats did use a pair of 13-0 runs to take command.

PLAYING HARD IS A SKILL

  • One of the things that K-State has prided itself in under head coach Bruce Weber has been its ability to play harder than its opponents… Nothing is more valuable to Weber in this regard as the Wayne McClain Play Hart Chart, which is named in honor of the longtime Illinois high school coach and Wildcats’ former director of development who passed away on Oct. 15, 2014.
  • The chart, which is kept for both teams by graduate assistants and team managers, is a point system based on the elements of playing hard, including deflections/blocks, steals, dives, loose balls, offensive rebounds and charges (+2).
  • K-State has won the Play Hard Chart in 7 of 8 games by a combined score of 358-249.
  • Senior D.J. Johnson has a team-best 73 points on the Play Hard Chart and has won the chart 5 times this year… He has 512 points in his career, which ranks second on the team to fellow senior Wesley Iwundu (525).

  • Brown leads all Wildcats with 7 double-figure scoring games, including each of the first 7 games.

IWUNDU MOVING UP THE CHARTS

  • Senior Wesley Iwundu could be the first Wildcat in school history to record 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 100 steals in a career… Currently, he is shy of the milestone by 108 points, 59 rebounds, 28 assists and 7 steals.

  • Iwundu is one of only 3 Big 12 players to rank in the Top 20 in scoring and rebounding and Top 15 in assists.
  • Iwundu is the leader in points (892), rebounds (441), assists (272), steals (93), minutes (2,854), games (105) and starts (97).
  • Iwundu moved into the career Top 10 in assists (272) with 2 at Saint Louis (12/3), while he is 35th in scoring (892).
  • Iwundu has played in 72 consecutive games, including a streak of 60 starts in a row… His 97 career starts currently rank 8th in school history and needs just 3 more starts to become just the 7th Wildcat with 100 career starts.

texas-bowl
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Riding a 5-1 record over the final half of the 2016 season, including three straight wins to secure its fifth eight-win season since 2010, K-State Nation is heading to Houston for the first time since 2006 as Kansas State Athletics Director John Currie announced today that the Wildcats have accepted an invitation to play in the 2016 AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl on Wednesday, December 28.

The game, which dates back to 2006 when K-State played in the inaugural bowl matchup, pits the Big 12 and the SEC and will be played at NRG Stadium at 8 p.m. CT, with a nationwide television audience watching on ESPN. The Wildcats’ opponent from the SEC will be announced later this evening.

“I am very proud of our team and coaches for another terrific season and earning our seventh-straight bowl invitation,” said Currie. “With season ticket holders from 44 different states and a national fan base that features more than 250,000 friends and alumni across the country, including more than 3,000 in the Houston area, we are excited to showcase our football program and Kansas State University in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl against an SEC opponent. I know our fans are excited to again showcase their unprecedented support, which includes 33-straight sellouts at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, in one of America’s largest cities while our football student-athletes, coaches and staff are provided a first-class experience.”
The Wildcats (8-4) will be playing in their 20th bowl game in school history and 18th under Bill Snyder as the Cats are 7-10 all-time in bowls under the legendary and hall of fame head coach. Following 11-straight bowls from 1993-2003 under Snyder, the Cats have now gone bowling in each of the last seven seasons and will be making the program’s second appearance in the Texas Bowl.

“Congratulations to Coach Snyder, his staff and our student-athletes for being selected to the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl,” said President Richard Myers. “We are very excited to be headed to Texas and representing the Big 12 Conference. This provides a fitting end to a successful season, and we look forward to our fans continuing a great K-State tradition by turning Houston purple.”

K-State heads into bowl season as one of the hottest teams in college football, winning five of its last six games, including the final three. The Wildcats’ road to the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl began with a tough road loss at No. 8 Stanford and followed with five wins over the next seven games, including Big 12 wins over Texas Tech, Texas and Iowa State. Following a tough fourth-quarter loss to Oklahoma State, K-State won at Baylor for the first time since 2002 and also kept the Governor’s Cup trophy in Manhattan for the eighth straight season under Snyder with a 34-19 win over in-state rival Kansas. The Wildcats wrapped up their regular season with a dominating 30-6 victory at TCU.

In addition to a Big 12-leading 29 selections to the Academic All-Big 12 team and the No. 1 football Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the Big 12, excitement in Wildcat football was also evidenced by six sellout crowds at Bill Snyder Family Stadium this season, which ran K-State’s consecutive sellout streak to 33 games.

“We are proud of the young men in our program for the way they improved throughout the season and very pleased to represent Kansas State University and the Big 12 Conference in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl,” said head coach Bill Snyder. “The Texas Bowl is a first-class bowl organization with a rich history, and we appreciate the entire bowl staff for their efforts and support of our program.

“We have a wonderful fan base, and so many people that save up their nickels and dimes throughout the course of the year, and the only vacation they take is the one after our (regular) season is over. They love to attend bowls and it’s why we have such great attendance year in and year out at bowl games. They are fully invested in our program and this means a great deal to them.”
K-State’s seating allotment for the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl includes a total of 10,500 tickets, and after accommodating pre-orders, student tickets and team needs, approximately 6,500 tickets remain for the general public.  All fans who placed a pre-order will receive the number of tickets that were requested. The K-State Athletics Ticket Office will work over the next week to assign specific seats based on the athletic department priority points and mail pre-ordered tickets. Detailed information regarding bowl ticket order fulfillment has been emailed to fans who placed a pre-order.

Berry’s Two Picks Lift Chiefs Over Falcons

chiefs logoATLANTA (AP) — Eric Berry returned an interception for a touchdown, and then brought back another pick for a 2-point conversion that gave the Kansas City Chiefs an improbable 29-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

The Falcons, rallying from a 27-16 deficit, went ahead 28-27 on Matt Ryan’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Aldrick Robinson with 4:32 remaining.

Atlanta decided to go for 2, looking to stretch the margin to a field goal. But Berry stepped in front of Ryan’s pass and ran 99 yards the other way to give the Chiefs (9-3) their winning margin. It came after Denver won a game in similar fashion last month, returning a blocked PAT for the winning points at New Orleans.

Berry had another huge play with less than a minute to go in the first half, picking off Ryan’s pass over the middle and bringing it back 37 yards for a touchdown. After reaching the end zone, the suburban Atlanta native handed the ball to his mother sitting in the stands at the Georgia Dome.

Those weren’t the only big plays for the Chiefs. On fourth-and-2 from their own 45, Kansas City faked a punt and snapped the ball directly to Albert Wilson , who played his college ball in the same stadium for Georgia State. Wilson burst up the middle for a 55-yard touchdown that extended Kansas City’s lead in the third quarter.

Alex Smith completed 21 of 25 passes for 270 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown to Spencer Ware. Travis Kelce was Kansas City’s top receiver, hauling in eight passes for 140 yards.

Ryan was 22 of 34 for 297 yards, but his two huge mistakes cost the Falcons (7-5). Julio Jones hauled in seven passes for 113 yards, while Devonta Freeman had a couple of 1-yard touchdown runs.

LONG KICK

Forty-one-year-old Matt Bryant closed out the first half with the second-longest field goal of his career for the Falcons.

Barely across midfield, Bryant booted a 59-yarder that easily clear the crossbar, cutting Kansas City’s lead to 20-16 at the break. The only longer kick for Bryant was a 62-yarder with Tampa Bay in 2006.

He also tied Atlanta’s franchise record for longest field goal. Morten Andersen made a 59-yarder in 1995.

INJURY REPORT

The Falcons lost left tackle Jake Matthews to a left knee injury in the first half.

Trainers put a sleeve over the knee, and Matthews tested it out on the sideline with some runs and cuts. But he headed to the locker room just before halftime and didn’t return. Tom Compton finished out the game protecting Ryan’s blind side.

Kansas City was again missing Jeremy Maclin, its leading receiver. He returned to practice Wednesday and it was thought he’d be able to play after sitting out three straight games with a groin injury. But he didn’t dress against the Falcons.
