Kansas rewards Beaty with contract extension, hefty raise

small jayhawkLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas has rewarded David Beaty with a two-year contract extension and a significant raise after he took the Jayhawks from a winless record in his first season to a pair of wins in Year 2.

The extension keeps Beaty with the Jayhawks through the 2021 season, while increasing his salary to $1.6 million in the first year with an additional $100,000 each succeeding year.

Beaty had been among the worst-paid coaches in power-five conferences, making $800,000 last season.

Kansas was a smoldering program when Beaty took over from the fired Charlie Weis, but his team showed promise last season despite failing to win a game. Victories over Rhode Island in the Jayhawks’ opener and an upset of Texas during the conference schedule were tangible evidence of progress.

K-State’s Willis Accepts Invitation to Reese’s Senior Bowl

willisMANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State senior defensive end Jordan Willis has accepted an invitation to play in the 68th Annual Reese’s Senior Bowl, held on January 28, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, the organization announced Monday.

Willis, the 2016 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and an All-American by multiple outlets, will be the seventh Wildcat to play in the game since 2012. Each of the last two years, a former K-State player who participated in the premier college scouting event has been a high draft pick: Tyler Lockett – a third-round pick in 2015 by the Seattle Seahawks – and Cody Whitehair – a second-round selection in 2016 by the Chicago Bears.

A product of Kansas City, Missouri, Willis led the Big 12 and ranked ninth nationally during the regular season with a school-record tying 11.5 sacks as part of his 16.5 tackles for loss on the year. Willis has 26.0 career sacks to rank third in school history, while his 39.5 career TFLs rank ninth in K-State history and mark the first time a Wildcat has cracked the top 10 since 2001.

Entering his final game as a Wildcat, Willis has recorded a sack in 11 of the last 16 games dating back to his junior year and a TFL in 14 of the last 16.

A team captain for the 2016 Wildcats, Willis has helped lead K-State to an 8-4 record, including a 6-3 mark in the Big 12 to finish fourth in the league standings. Kansas State faces Texas A&M (8-4, 4-4 SEC) in the 2016 AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium on Wednesday, December 28. It is the 20th bowl game in school history and the 18th under head coach Bill Snyder. The game kicks off at 8 p.m., and will be shown to a national audience on ESPN, while it can be heard across the K-State Sports Network and on ESPN Radio.

Public tickets for K-State fans are still available at the K-State Online Ticket Office and through the K-State Athletics Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum or via phone at 1-800-221-CATS. Fans are strongly encouraged to order through K-State’s official allotment to ensure that all Wildcat fans are seated in the official K-State sections of the stadium. The location for K-State’s ticket allotment at the Texas Bowl is among the best of any bowl game with prime sideline seating locations available for $85.

PowerCatMANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Katie Lou Samuelson hit six 3-pointers and poured in 26 points, Napheesa Collier added 22 and top-ranked Connecticut used a big run in each half to knock off Kansas State 75-58 on Sunday.

Kia Nurse added 13 points for the Huskies (9-0), who ran their winning streak to 84 straight games, six shy of their 90-game stretch from 2008-10. It was also their 27th consecutive road win.

Breanna Lewis had 18 points to lead the Wildcats (9-1), who were off to their best start since 2008.

K-State Football Awards Ceremony

awards

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Jesse Ertz, Jordan Willis and Dante Barnett were named Kansas State’s 2016 offensive and defensive MVPs, while Colborn Couchman, Trent Tanking, Dominique Heath and Byron Pringle took home special teams MVP honors as the Wildcat football program held its annual awards ceremony Sunday at McCain Auditorium on the K-State campus.

Ertz enters the bowl season with the fifth-most rushing yards among FBS quarterbacks this season which included three 100-plus games in 2016. He has combined for 18 touchdowns and needs just 107 total yards in the bowl game to move into the school’s single-season Top 10 for total offense.

Willis swept Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors from both the coaches and Associated Press as the product of Kansas City, Missouri, leads the league and ranks ninth nationally with a school-record tying 11.5 sacks in addition to 16.5 tackles for loss to rank second in the conference and 20th in the country this season.

A four-year starter, Barnett garnered All-Big 12 recognition this season after recording 61 tackles, 3.5 for losses, one interception and three passes defended. The “quarterback” of the defense also currently is the most experience player in the Big 12 Conference with 40 career starts.

K-State again ranked as one of the top overall special teams units in college football as Pringle and Heath both recorded return scores this season, while Couchman and Tanking combined for 75-percent of all special teams tackles and were key ingredients to the unit’s success.

Also on the evening, Willis and All-Big 12 linebacker Elijah Lee garnered Defensive Front Seven Player of the Year honors, while All-Big 12 right tackle Dalton Risner earned Offensive Lineman of the Year honors.

On the academic side, Academic All-Big 12 selections Zach Reuter and Matt Seiwert received the program’s Scholar-Athlete award, while the Big 12-leading and school-record 29 Academic All-Big 12 selections were also honored. A total of 19 Wildcats will play in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl having already earned degrees from Kansas State.

Riding a 5-1 record over the final half of the 2016 season, including three straight wins to secure its fifth eight-win season since 2011, K-State will play Texas A&M in the 2016 AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl on Wednesday, December 28. The game, which dates back to 2006 when K-State played in the inaugural bowl matchup, pits the Big 12 and the SEC and will be played at NRG Stadium at 8 p.m. CT, with a nationwide television audience watching on ESPN.

Public tickets for K-State are available now at the K-State Online Ticket Office and through the K-State Athletics Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum or via phone at 1-800-221-CATS. Student tickets, priced at $85, are also available.

Jayhawks Cruise to Win Over Nebraska

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Frank Mason III had 18 points and seven assists without a turnover, Josh Jackson and Svi Mykhailiuk added 15 points apiece and No. 3 Kansas jayhawkcruised to an 89-72 victory over Nebraska on Saturday.

The Jayhawks (9-1) had no trouble with their old conference foe despite playing without forward Carlton Bragg Jr., who is suspended indefinitely. Bragg was charged Friday with misdemeanor battery.

Bragg sat on the bench in street clothes, watching as Devonte Graham scored 14 points and Landen Lucas added 12, as the Jayhawks rolled to their 18th consecutive win over the Huskers and their 46th in a row at Allen Fieldhouse.

Tai Webster led Nebraska (5-5) with 22 points. Ed Morrow Jr. finished with 16.

Wildcats Pull Away from Washington State for Win

PowerCatWesley Iwundu had 15 points and eight rebounds, Barry Brown had 14 points and Kansas State methodically pulled away from Washington State in the second half for a 70-56 victory Saturday night.

Dean Wade added 11 points and Xavier Sneed finished with 10 for the Wildcats (9-1), who overcame a lousy first-half shooting performance to win their 16th consecutive non-conference home game.

It was also their third straight win over the Cougars.

Washington State (5-5) controlled almost the entire first half, never trailing until the final couple of minutes. But coach Ernie Kent’s team fell behind 28-26 headed into the locker room, and kept slipping farther behind during the second half, when the Wildcats heated up from the perimeter.

Josh Hawkinson had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars. Charles Callison also scored 10.

Saint Xavier Boys Capture Win

St. Xavier Rams LogoThe Saint Xavier boys high school basketball team rolled to a 70-46 victory over Blue Valley Randolph Friday night. The game was played at the Bradley Gym at Saint Xavier.
