Wildcats Ranked in Top-10 of Track and Field News’ Dual Rankings

track-teamMANHATTAN, Kan. – After a successful start to the 2017 indoor season, both the men’s and women’s track teams received top-10 nods in the Track and Field News’ initial indoor dual meet rankings, the organization has announced.

The Wildcat women enter the initial top-25 list ranked second in the country with a perfect 2-0 mark in dual meets, while the men begin the season ranked eighth with a 1-1 record. The women lead all Big 12 teams in the rankings, while the men have the second-best ranking behind the third-ranked Kansas Jayhawks.

“It is early in the season so I doubt this accurately reflects everyone’s teams so far,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto said about the initial rankings. “We do attempt to have a complete team, so ranking among the nation’s best is gratifying.”

The ranking comes from the teams most recent meet, the KSU-KU-WSU Triangular, where the women scored 118 points and defeated both the Jayhawks (114) and the Shockers (112). The men, who posted 113 points in the competition, topped the Shockers (105), but finished behind the Jayhawks (128).

K-State went on to finished second overall in the competition with 231 team points behind Kansas, who won the event with a final score of 242 points. Wichita State finished in third place overall with a final team score of 217 points.

To become ranked, the team has had to compete in one or more dual meet, which is defined as a scored meet between four teams or fewer. The ranking considers wins and losses, marks and strength of the meet schedule, as well as for taking the dual meet competition seriously.

The complete women’s rankings can be found on the Track and Field News’ website by clicking here, while the men’s rankings can be found here.

K-State returns home this weekend as the Wildcats host the DeLoss Dodds Invitational on January 20-21 in Ahearn Field House. Combined events on Friday begin at 10 a.m., CT, while action on Saturday begins at 9 a.m., CT. Admission to the meet is free.

GAME 18 – QUICK HITTERS

  • Kansas State (13-4, 2-3 Big 12) hits the road for another Big 12 mid-week matchup, as the Wildcats take on former player and assistant coach Brad Underwood and his Oklahoma State Cowboys (10-7, 0-5 Big 12) at 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU with Anish Shroff and Tim Welsh.
  • Underwood played two seasons at K-State (1984-86) for the legendary Jack Hartman then returned in 2006 for a 6-year run on the coaching staffs of head coaches Bob Huggins and Frank Martin, where he helped the Wildcats to a 140-66 (.680) record and 6 postseason appearances.
  • Underwood is one of 4 current Division I head coaches (along with UTSA’s Steve Henson, SMU’s Tim Jankovich and Oklahoma’s Lon Kruger), who played at K-State, and one of 13 former Wildcat players or coaches who currently serve as a head coach at the Division I or II level.
  • The contest begins a stretch of 3 road trips in a 4-game stretch for the Wildcats, which are 3-3 in contests away from home and 2-2 in true road games. The team is 0-2 on the road in Big 12 play, falling in the waning seconds at No. 3/2 Kansas (90-88) and Texas Tech (66-65).
  • K-State owns a 78-52 advantage in the all-time series with Oklahoma State, but has found Gallagher-Iba Arena a difficult place to play losing 15 times in the last 16 meetings with the last win coming on Jan. 12, 2012.
  • The Wildcats has dropped 3 of their last 4 games, including consecutive games for the first time this season, after falling 77-68 on Saturday to top-ranked Baylor. The 9-point loss was the largest of the season after losing the previous 3 by 4 points. The loss also snapped the team’s 11-game home court winning streak, including a 10-game streak at Bramlage Coliseum.
  • Senior D.J. Johnson, who leads the Big 12 in field goal percentage at 62.8 percent, collected his 5th career 20-point game, including his 3rd this season, with 20 points against the Bears on 9-of-13 field goals.  He has scored in double figures in 6 of the last 7 games.
  • K-State is the only Big 12 team to have all 5 starters averaging in double figures and the lone school with 5 double-digit scorers. In all, the Wildcats have had 6 different leading scorers with 5 of those players tallying at least 10 double-figure scoring games led by sophomore Barry Brown’s 13.
  • K-State ranks among the national leaders in steals (8.2 spg./32nd) and turnovers forced (15.8/34th). The Wildcats have helped force double-digit turnovers in 15 games, including 10 or more steals 5 times, and have scored at least 14 points off those turnovers in 16 games. The team is averaging 17.5 points off of turnovers, including 14.2 points in Big 12 play.

THE OPPONENT: OKLAHOMA STATE (10-7, 0-5 Big 12)

  • OSU possess 3 of the Top 15 scorers in the Big 12, including sophomore Jawun Evans (18.2 ppg.), junior Jeffrey Carroll (16.8 ppg.) and senior Phil Forte (13.8 ppg.)… Evans ranks second, Carroll fourth and Forte 11th, while Forte leads the Big 12 in 3-point field goals made (2.6) and free throw percentage (96.2)… Carroll is connecting on a team-best 57.8 percent from the field to go with a team-best 7.0 rebounds, while Evans is tops in assists (5.3 apg.) and steals (2.1 spg.).

Royals and Duffy Agree on Five-Year Contract

kcr twoThe Royals and Danny Duffy have agreed to a $65 million, five-year contract that will keep the popular left-hander in Kansas City.

Duffy will make $5 million this year, $14 million in 2018, $15.25 million each in 2019 and 2020 and $15.5 million in 2021.

Duffy was eligible for arbitration this offseason and would have been eligible for free agency after the World Series. Now, he will remain with the team that chose him in the third round of the 2007 amateur draft, helped him to recover from Tommy John surgery and gave him a chance to be a World Series champion.

Andy Reid Believes Holding Should Have Been a No-Call

football clip artKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid doesn’t believe the holding penalty on left tackle Eric Fisher that cost Kansas City a tying 2-point conversion against Pittsburgh on Sunday night should have been called.

After watching film of the decisive play in the Steelers’ 18-16 playoff victory, Reid said Monday that “I don’t want to be fined any money, but I’d lean a different way.”

Fisher appeared to hook Steelers pass rusher James Harrison on the conversion attempt with less than 3 minutes left in the game.

But the play was not cut-and-dried: Harrison dipped especially low and may have been losing his balance, and he likely would not have gotten to the quarterback anyway.

Still, the flag negated the successful 2-point conversion. And when the Chiefs tried again from the 12-yard line, Alex Smith’s throw fell incomplete and the Steelers were able to run out the clock.

Chiefs Fall to Steelers in AFC Playoffs

small chiefsPittsburgh’s Chris Boswell set an NFL postseason record with six field goals and the Steelers eliminated the Kansas City Chiefs 18-16 to become the second victorious road team in the postseason.

The Steelers took advantage of a holding penalty to negate a successful Kansas City two-point conversion after the Chiefs moved within two points with 2:43 left. On the second try from the 12-yard line, Alex Smith threw an incomplete pass in the back of the end zone and the Steelers held on. The Steelers have won nine straight games.

Of note, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH’-lihs-bur-gur) tied Mel Blount and Terry Bradshaw with his 19th postseason playoff game, the most in team history. Roethlisberger completed 20 of 31 for 224 yards.

Big Ben will set the team record when the Steelers travel to Foxborough to play the Patriots next Sunday in the AFC championship. The Patriots beat the Steelers 27-16 on Oct. 23. Pittsburgh played without Roethlisberger, who was out with a knee injury.

Kansas Holds Off Oklahoma State

jayhawkFrank Mason III scored 22 points, freshman Josh Jackson added 20 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 2 Kansas held off Oklahoma State 87-80 on Saturday.

The Jayhawks (16-1, 5-0 Big 12) rallied for their 16th straight win and could move into the top spot when the AP poll comes out on Monday. No. 1 Baylor lost 89-68 to West Virginia on Tuesday.

Devonte’ Graham scored 21 points for Kansas, and Svi Mykhailiuk had 14. Landen Lucas added seven points and 12 rebounds.

Quotable

  • “Baylor is very good,” said head coach Bruce Weber. “Ish (Wainright) is good, Manu (Lecomte) is good. They are smart. They executed, they made plays and we just did not have an answer for them in the second half. Obviously, second chance points hurt us, 18-5, and they got 16 offensive rebounds. Points off turnovers also hurt us. We had 15 turnovers. We only had three at half. Then the second half we had too many turnovers and a couple of them led to easy baskets, which allowed them to get their head up.”
