  • The Cyclones are one of the most experienced teams in the Big 12 with 5 senior starters led by All-American candidate Monte Morris, who leads the team in both scoring (16.1 ppg.) and assists (6.0 apg.)… Fellow senior Naz Mitrou-Long also averages 16.1 points per game to go with a team-best 47 3-point field goals, while Deonte Burton (13.9 ppg.) and Matt Thomas (11.0 ppg.) also average double figures… Burton leads the Cyclones in rebounding (6.8 rpg.) and blocked shots (1.2 bpg.).

BREAKING DOWN THE SERIES

  • This will be the 223rd meeting between the two schools with K-State leading the series, 137-85.
  • The 222 meetings are the 3rd-most against one opponent behind Kansas (285) and Missouri (236).

  • The Cyclones swept the season series a year ago for the first time since 2012, posting a 76-63 win at Bramlage Coliseum on Jan. 16, 2016 before an 80-61 victory at Hilton Coliseum on Feb. 27, 2016.

LAST SEASON VS. IOWA STATE

  • No. 17/17 Iowa State broke open a tight contest with a 13-0 run midway through the second half, as the Cyclones tallied an 80-61 victory over K-State in the last meeting at Hilton Coliseum on Feb. 27, 2016… With the Wildcats leading 39-37 with 16:28 to play, the Cyclones scored 13 consecutive points over a 3-minute stretch, which included 3 straight 3-pointers… The loss spoiled a stellar performance from D.J. Johnson, who collected his first career 20-point game with a game-high 22 to go with 9 boards.
  • In the first meeting of 2016, K-State fell behind early and could never recover, as No. 17/18 Iowa State posted a 76-63 win at Bramlage Coliseum on Jan. 16… The Cyclones used a 15-0 run midway through the first half then used another 7-0 spurt to prevent any further comeback by the Wildcats… Justin Edwards led the way with 19 points, while Wesley Iwundu (11) and Kamau Stokes (10) also registered double figures… It was Iowa State’s first win at Bramlage Coliseum since Feb. 25, 2012.

Patriots vs. Falcons in Super Bowl

football clip artIt will be the New England Patriots against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 51 at Houston’s Reliant Stadium on Feb. 5. Both teams advanced with blowouts in the conference title games.

The Patriots have earned their NFL-record ninth berth in the Super Bowl by slamming the Pittsburgh Steelers, 36-17 in the AFC championship game. Tom Brady was at his playoff best in completing 32 of 42 passes for 384 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He hit Chris Hogan for touchdown throws of 16 and 34 yards before Julian Edelman’s 10-yard scoring grab put New England ahead 33-9 late in the third quarter.

Hogan had nine receptions for 180 yards, while Edelman gained 118 on his eight catches.

It was a tough evening for Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH’-lis-bur-gur), who was 31 of 47 for one touchdown and one interception. Roethlisberger’s lone TD throw came in the closing minutes.

Pittsburgh finished the game without running back Le’Veon (LEH’-vee-ahn) Bell, who suffered a groin injury late in the first quarter.

The Falcons are NFC champions after Matt Ryan threw for four touchdowns and ran for another in a 44-21 rout of the Packers. Atlanta dominated the first half, scoring on four of their five possessions to take a 24-0 lead into the locker room.

Ryan was 27 of 38 for 392 yards and no interceptions. His primary target was Julius Jones, whose status was in doubt early last week because of a sprained left toe. Jones had nine receptions for 180 yards and two TDs, including a 73-yard grab-and-run that put the Falcons up 31-0 on their second offensive play of the second half.

Atlanta blanked the Packers until Aaron Rodgers hit Davante Adams for a two-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Rodgers was 27 of 45 for 287 yards, three TDs and one interception.

The Falcons are in the Super Bowl for just the second time in their 51-season history, and the first since their loss to Denver in 1999.

Oddsmakers have installed the Patriots as the early three-point favorites.

Blue Jays Third in Emporia

blue jay logoThe Junction City Blue Jay wrestling team went 3-2 in dual competition in Emporia on Saturday, to finish third overall. Derby went 5-0 to capture first place while Olathe North was second out of five teams with a 4-1 record.

Junction City lost to Derby 43-27, defeated Seaman 48-29, Emporia 60-15 and Valley Center 38-37. They lost to Olathe North 45-36.

In the individual competition the Blue Jays placed five wrestlers on the All Tournament team. All five won their weight classes including Max Bazan who was 4-0 at 126 pounds, Terrence Adeleye 5-0 at at 170, Aryus Jones 5-0 at 182, Jawonnis Hinton 4-1 at 195, and Jeffrey Walters 3-0 at 220 pounds.

Royals Pitcher Yordano Ventura Killed in Car Crash in Dominican Republic

yordano-venturaRoyals pitcher Yordano Ventura, whose electric arm helped his team win the 2015 World Series title, was killed in a car crash in his native Dominican Republic early Sunday.

Royals vice president Mike Swanson confirmed Ventura’s death. He was 25.

With the fitting nickname of “Ace,” Ventura burst onto the baseball scene with a 100 mph fastball and an explosive attitude to match. He was a fierce competitor who was always willing to challenge hitters inside, then deal with the ramifications when they decided to charge the mound.

Ventura went 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA in 2014, his first full season in the big leagues, and helped the long-downtrodden Royals reach the World Series for the first time since 1985. He proceeded to dominate San Francisco in both of his starts, though the Royals would ultimately lose in seven games.

He followed by helping Kansas City win the championship the next year.

Blue Jays Fall to Bishop Carroll, Finish Sixth in Tournament of Champions

little basketballsBishop Carroll outscored Junction City 27-15 in the first half and made the lead stand up enroute to a 50-38 victory over the Blue Jays in the fifth place consolation game at the Tournament of Champions in Dodge City.  Junction City scored only four points in the second quarter as the Blue Jays fell to 3-8 on the season.

After the game Junction City Nate Schmitt noted the Blue Jays play well for about two-and-a-half quarters. We played well in the third quarter the last two nights, but the unfortunate thing is we play well for about two quarters, two-and-a-half quarters. We, for some reason, aren’t ready to go from the start. We play almost well enough to win and we only play two-and-half quarters. So we’ve got to find a way to put a full game together.”

Junction City went 1-2 in the tournament with a first round loss to Shawnee Mission South and a consolation semifinal round victory over Newton.

In the remainder of the tournament on Saturday, Newton won the seventh-place consolation game over Dodge City 65-38, Wichita North claimed third place with a 63-55 win over Shawnee Mission South and in the championship game Holcomb defeated Derby 65-61.

In the free throw shooting competition held in conjunction with the tournament Kody Westerhaus of Junction City finished second. On Friday he made 47 of 50 free throws and in the final round of competition on Saturday made 23 of 25 free throws.
